Tommy Smith

Think he was a Wilder signing. I remember we had him on trial and he played in a few pre-season games before we decided to sign him. It seemed Wilder wanted to have a good look at him first.

He was clearly only signed to provide cover for Jones, although he never looked comfortable playing RWB.

It looked at one point like he was going to turn out to be a poor signing, as he wasn't suitable for the wing-back role but it's worked out well for him in the end, now that he can play in his natural position.

Thought he was a bit shaky for a few games but has got better and better with games.

A real leader too, which is a huge positive.

Funny watching Howson on the highlights when he realises he's just made an assist when Crooks puts it in. His first assist under Carrick and first for 12 games. .ish. Anyway he starts to run towards that side of the goal where Crooks scored, realises it might be too far and decides to do a 180 and go back towards Smith , celebrating like he's saying your the assist of the assist , lets celebrate :giggle: - as Smith had knocked it back to him about 6 yds.

Not sure Smith is a long term option but looked very solid in the majority of games so far

Whether we replace Smith depends, for me, on how highly rated Dodds is. He's 21 so needs to start breaking through if he's good enough, and Smith is ideal to have as we ease him in. If Dodds isn't deemed good enough to step up then we will probably have to invest in that position.

Having said that I like Smith, and he has prem experience so how much would we need to spend to get better.

He’s out Gary Neville.
Doesn’t stand out technically, but is a solid full back, a leader and consistently good.
I can see him being out number 1 right back all season and don’t think we will look at this position in January with Dijksteel being a solid back-up

Been a fantastic addition! Got the right blend of ability and aggression. He is also very vocal and always in the thick of things. Got a little bit of a tough (nasty) streak that we’ve been lacking for some time too!
Hard to understand why players with as much to offer as him are kicking around without a club each summer. File alongside Watmore, Peltier, Bamba, Taylor as an out of contract success.
For all the bashing the recruitment department get, they’ve had some brilliant successes in the out of contract market.

This seasons Peltier and Bamba. I don't expect much game time from him due to Jones.

Yet like the two above. He's really contributing and probably on his way to another year deal as a bit younger. Another not getting a kick under Wilder but at the club all along.

You need steady proven champo players. Just proves the free agent list can be utilised.
