Tonali in "discussions" over 10 month ban

Since when did 'guilty' parties get to discuss punishments?

Sky sports are saying that his legal team are in discussions with the authorities over the length of a ban, maybe its just the wording used by Sky, but that sound a bit backwards to me.

Anyway that would mean the rest of the season and the Euros missed for him

Having seen the footage of one of his dodgy bookings, I think that's incredibly lenient

Maybe there's some sort of plea deal agreement to reduce the punishment. He may have agreed to give information on the people higher up the food chain or possibly just other players and club officials who might have been involved in order to secure further convictions.

Grass!

Interesting that he's getting a bigger punishment than Toney, for what I see as less severe offences, and Toney actively disrupted the investigation.

I'm guessing that's because of the Italians being harsher on such things with their history.

Isn’t it possibly to do with the punishment being set by the Italian authorities? And then the English FA and/or Premier League just have to adhere to it.

What’s this stuff about the criminal aspect? I can’t find anything reputable online. What’s happened here? I thought he’d been betting on football matches.

I should’ve read your second sentence properly before replying!

i think the process is a) relevant national FA impose sentence then b) they apply to UEFA/FIFA to have punishment applied in other jurisdictions. That's what I read for Ivan Toney

At least 2 possibilities. Firstly, the betting platforms were themselves illegal. Tonali would probably be part of a broader investigation here. Secondly, match-fixing. Tonali denies betting on matches he was personally involved in. I doubt they'll take his word for that!

If he has been involved in betting in matches he played in, he must receive a lifetime ban. I would have banned Toney for life too, nothing stopping him putting a bet on through a pal.

I think Clough knew the Boro defenders were taking back handers when he played for us, that's why he asked for a transfer and the Boro board gave him it. I suspect they were involved in it too.

b***r addiction, its a poor excuse.

Football has always been bent.
