Top Ten Games at Riverside?

I'm not saying that it should be in the top 10 games of all time, but the last time we player Derby and won 4-1 in Feb 22. That felt special not because the win was in any way unexpected, but more about the bad feelings and resentment surrounding the whole Derby shambles, which made the win very sweet indeed.

Looks about right. I'm not sure why I was sat there. I can't remember. They weren't my usual season ticket seats. I used to sit in the North Stand at the time.

My dad had clocked them early. They were directly in front of us. One of them had received a text message which appeared to be from a Liverpool fan winding them up. He was showing his mate and my dad had seen in and nudged me. I know he shouldn't be reading people's messages the nosey cvnt before anyone starts.
He didn’t need to. The accents were a giveaway.

I can think of similar: a 3-1 win over Brum in front of about 14k. What made it special was we finished with 9 men, and were really hanging on until injury time when Tomlin broke through and scored the 3rd.

These hardcore gems are never going to make it on to the list of "special occasion matches" though.

Personally, I'd also include Boro 4 Coventry 0 in 1996.
We'd just beaten West Ham 4-1 a few days before, and I, an many others, came away from that match thinking we could do anything.

I think Banik Ostrava was fairly special too. First European match, and to be fair, their fans really added something to the occasion.

I remember this very well! I was in the South Stand and the atmosphere became quite hostile towards Birmingham. They were close to scoring an equaliser to make it 2-2 and like you say Tomlin breaks through to put the game to bed.

I don't recall particular hostility to Birmingham, but I'm in the West so maybe less exposed to it. Certainly hostility towards the ref after 2 red cards. One of the most defiant atmospheres I can recall.

I remember the Charlton cup game was a corker too, in which Viduka was amazing, but not as important as the ones you've posted.

Another I always remember fondly is the 5-3 win against Birmingham when they had Bruce as manager. It was hyped up as a banker of 0-0 because both teams had the best defensive records in the league, going into the game.

Beating Sunderland in Division 1 to ensure they slipped into the PO's and we pinched an auto spot was a fantastic game. Armstrong scored that day.
That was the Saturday after the Liverpool semi-final too - what a week that was!

We must be talking purely atmosphere with this list and not entertainment value?

I think significance counts too, either in terms of what's on the line, or as a landmark for the club. That's why 3-2 vs Burnley or 3-1 vs Brum won't make this sort of list.

Important matches can lead to great atmospheres (but not always), but a good atmosphere doesn't require a big crowd or a special occasion. But I think there was more riding on many of the matches mentioned than just 3 points.

Derby was a good shout for atmosphere though.
