Though you could argue that politics has been in the sewer for a while. And that there may be deeper depths plumbed…
The attack of a President on a priest calling for mercy for vulnerable men, women and children has punched a hole in my spirit.
Every contextual angle you could add, Trump is performative, he’s a man child, church vs state, evaporates in the words she spoke and the words with which he has responded.
I’m not religious and would likely not be the first to see religions expanded or handed any special privilege - but I do respect the right of people who choose to worship.
The hatred, which I already knew existed in Trump and the far right, has hit me like a tonne of bricks. The attacks that woman is facing online is a barrage of anti-humanity by the vilest of people. I have no doubt she will face physical and in-person retribution.
I’m fairly well versed in politics and have worried about the rise of the far right for a while. I think it’s hard to escape now. We’re past the event horizon. The hatred and opprobrium of the mob is the new currency and reason and compassion will become a social and political debt.
I see no other outcome. Any kind of reasonable point of view will be wiped out by this tsunami and we’ll see more far right Governments across Europe. Perhaps this will reset the national consciousness and we’ll come out of the other side, in a couple of decades, with a healthy respect of compassion, and decency, and liberalism…and perhaps democracy.
But those couple of decades will be torture if your face doesn’t fit, or you don’t make the top x% cut off. I wish this would be confined to four years…but I fear the genie is goose stepping out of the bottle.
