unusual footballers?

Espen Baardsen ex Spurs/Watford became a city financial type, gave the game up for it. Used to read the FT on the team bus and talk share prices with Alan Sugar.

Arjan de Zeeuw of Wigan during their heyday either was qualified, or was part way to qualifying, as a doctor at the time his football career took off.

However, I think when he retired, he didn't pursue a medical career as intended: he went on to become a private detective/gumshoe type.

Shaka Hislop was, I think, an intern at NASA prior to football.

Sadio Mane has had some bad press this week, but he is fairly well known for giving large parts of his income away, building schools and hospitals in his home town.

I have to agree that Pat Nevin is a great pundit: probably the one I enjoy listening to most.

Not to mention his Iphone has a cracked screen which I have seen on Linkedin a million times.

Craig Johnston.
Amazing back story about how he became established at Boro (see link below).
Transferred to Liverpool, played for England, then retired early (age 27) to look after his poorly sister in Australia.
Took up photography.
Invented the Predator football boot.
Invented mini-bars for hotel rooms that automatically charged for items taken.

It's been posted on here before but this YouTube animation is brilliant:

I'll add Neville Southall to the list.

I know Wikipedia isn't reliable, but it's a fairy summary of what I've heard from other people about him.

Graeme LeSaux

Read the guardian and visited museums. Prompted Robbie Fowler to bend over and over him his ****.

George Friend and Patrick Bamford are two recent Boro players with more up top - Azaz too I believe.

A lot is said about Bamford apparently being clever, but his long-term Twitter bio, which hasn't changed in many years, contains two grammatical errors in one single sentence.
