Yeah I totally get that but purely as fan you want to see the best possible players in your team sporting glory and all that, maybe been naive but don't care if it is financially a good deal for the Boro as fan I just want to see great entertaining footballers

Thing is though - buying and selling young players with potential gives you more money in the kitty to hopefully sign great footballers a few seasons down the line.

We have a decent chance of 5/6 place IF we replace Rogers with a signing who scores more goals .
We need to concede less , it is goals against that is our downfall , so a CH would improve that hopefully.

It’s a massive decision for us - picking the right striker to invest the Rogers sale money into.

not really the new model though is it. As we understand it , the days of buying premium great players are over. We are buying young potential either for free or around 3m max. I thought the main point of the new model was to reduce -possibly to zero - the input which Gibson has to put in every year just to keep us running. ie about 12m . So we can't have it both ways . We either keep majority of profits from sales and reinvest a little in the same young n cheap recruits or we spend the profit and Gibson is still required to put in the yearly dosh to make up the huge difference.

I meant we’re only in the first phase of “the project”… ie signing young players for £1-2m and turning a profit.

Do that for a while and then you can start buying young players in the £5m+ bracket (still with a view to turning a profit, admittedly).


An example is Brentford signing Watkins for £1m, selling him for a profit, then going a bit more “up market” with the signing of Toney

With Alex Scott going for £22m and Blackburn turing down £18m for Wharton...then £12m for Rogers on a 3 1/2 year contract is a very bad deal.

What relevance do they have to us?

Not when you consider Blackburn turning down 18m for a defender or Webster going for 20 plus mill, Keane Potter for 18 m I think and the kid from Bristol City for plus 20m aswell all of whom where or aren't exactly world beaters
