My elderly parents are off to Spain and have asked about watching iPlayer whilst on holiday (they tried in March but got knocked back by the region setting).

I will have to do it for them obviously, I have had a look and it seems there are several options, but wondered if anyone had set one up and used one?

My dad is as tight as a gnat's chuff so any recommendations of free options would be welcome too!

I think the Opera browser has a free VPN built in. That could work but you might want to set the home page to the iPlayer website to make it easier for him.
 
It works with VPN unlimited too. It’s not free but they do a lifetime subscription that I’ve used for about 8 years now. The RRP is expensive but there are always deals on via the stacksocial site. I think you can get it for a little over £30 in USD and it works on 5 devices.

they don't give a &&&&

its only the tax payer that subsidise the foreign views. When have the BBC ever worried about the tax payer

Yes they have - whenever they find a VPN endpoint they block it. That also goes for some datacentre ranges. While I was in the States I had to move datacentres a number of times to run my own VPN. VPNSecure's endpoints are blocked - I have a lifetime sub for them.

Oh no they haven't


I use BBC iPlayer regularly - even right now. And Im in Europe outside UK. I use NordVPN - its 80 quid or dollars cant remember which for 2 years.
Works a treat. And I get every Boro match on Riverside live including the ones that are on SKY. (which is a lot at least 30%)

Try it on a trial. Its really good

If it wasn't for the VPN I would not be renewing my Riverside live season ticket. Too many games unavailable otherwise

SOME VPN providers have endpoints which have not yet been found by the BBC. If and when they do find them, they will block them.

I actually been using the same end point for more than 6 months now. But I think they have more than 20. Do you think the BBC spare resources to chase this up?
Inciidently ITV and Channel4 works fine with same endpoint

I don't know how much effort they put into it. VPNSecure do not seem to have many UK endpoints and it hasn't worked for a long time. Over the years, I've moved between at least half a dozen data centres that got blocked when they found the IP ranges in use for Virtual Private Servers. The one I'm with now has worked for about 3 years without any problems.

Some VPN providers are specifically marketing their use for iplayer and are taking steps to avoid blocks. Express is one of such providers that I'm aware of

As they're going to Spain, from my experience here, the only one that allows access to iPlayer is ExpressVPN - despite what's said above, the BBC are always looking to block access from abroad
