Warnock on Roberts

Never realised he said ‘ did he do anything when he came on’ about him last night. Bit harsh that. Wonder what his problem is with him.

Apart from a nice reverse ball to Tav when he hit the post??? Not many of our other players would have made that pass. They'd have just smashed a shot straight into one of the defenders. Definitely harsh seeing as within seconds of him coming on they scored and the game was effectively over. Think this is going to become one of those occasions where the fans want a player on the pitch but the manager starts to get stubborn about it and digs his heels in. The longer he is off the pitch the more he is going to turn into Maradona in the fans eyes!

Exactly, it’s that little bit of creativity we were missing. Don’t see why he had to bash him to be honest. Not a fan of that, at all.

I think the most frustrating thing is the fact we don't look like scoring and our creativity is terrible. Therefore when we have someone of Roberts ilk on the bench, it's strange he's not getting starts.

I don't think anyone is suggesting Roberts is the best player in the Championship, but when we're struggling to score and create chances, surely Roberts is worth a game or two, to see if he makes a difference to us going forward?

I get the impression Warnock wasn't keen on him, but we signed him anyways.

Wouldn't be surprised if City recall him in January and send him somewhere else as I don't think City will be happy with Roberts being benched all the time.

Agree

I've defended his exclusion whilst our midfield have been performing well. In the last two games the midfield has been appalling and there was not one decent performance last night (possible exception of Johnson), we now have Howson injured, Tavernier exhausted, Morsy unfit and Saville out of form.

Let's see what he can do starting. He's not Juninho, but he just might be enough to at least get us on the front foot.

I'd start him and Wing on Saturday on the simple philosophy "how much worse could it possibly be..."

Same here. Wing and Roberts to come into the side for me. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.

Exactly this. I'm not his biggest fan by any means but it's blindingly obvious what we're trying isn't working and he needs to be given a go. If d*ck Steel is fit again I would like to see a return to the 3 at the back, 5 in midfield and Roberts playing off a striker. For the last couple of games we seem to have reverted to type, smashing aimless balls up to an isolated striker.

Yeah, very much. Another one of Gibson's gifts?

Exactly what I would do.

Bettinelli

Dijksteel
Fry
McNair

Spence
Wing
Morsy
Tav
Johnson

Roberts
Assombalonga

There is def an issue there.

All I can think of is he does tend to run down blind alleys a bit.

But I’d still play him though

Controversial opinion alert but I think in the right team he would be one of the best in the division. Not really sure we play to his strengths - forward line too static and a lack of other creative midfielders to work with.

Stick him the Bournemouth or Watford teams and I think he'd look great.

Why sign him if he's not going to play?

And why did Warnock sign Hall, a defender who has spent the best part of the last 2 seasons injured? Defenders aren't a priority, but if you are going to use up the budget then buy one who is going to play, not sit on the treatment table.

Or Morsy? He's the same kind of player as about 4 other midfielders already on the books.

Or another goalie? Bettanelli can't be much better than whoever else Boro have.

But he used all the budget on players who aren't necessary, and then couldn't afford a striker worthy of the name. It frustrates the hell out of me that the priorities are as plain as day, yet they aren't being addressed.

And striker shooting practice? Or free kick practice? Or crossing practice? It can't be going on, because there's absolutely no evidence of it.

I hope this is just NW's way of motivating Roberts to prove him wrong. If we have a fully fit and on form Roberts we'll be a much better team.

wing and roberts in midfield haha they are both terrible. roberts has offered nothing since hes been here i have no idea what people see and that includes last season. Those who say he needs games he was outshone in his last start by a lad who hasnt played in over a year.

Wing cant read the game and is so slow its unbelieveable, unless he bangs a 30 yarder in he offers nothing either.

As someone says the longer a player is out of the team they seem to become maradona.

We are missing dijksteel massively not only in defence but calmness on the ball.

I can’t stand Wing. Think he’s a bad player but at the end of the day we need to mix it up. It’s what having a squad is about, Wing might pop up with a goal, Roberts might pop up with a mazy run and win a penalty. We need to change it, if it doesn’t work then have another re think but I would have no problem mixing it up a bit for the weekend. Something needs to be done.

I imagine Roberts is a frustrating player to manage, probably doesn't follow instructions. For Warnock it's probably Roberts, Tav or Watmore to keep us solid when playing with a back four. Personally I would play two out of the three, which we might need to do on Saturday if Howson is injured. Our current dip in form is more due to defensive lapses and we desperately need Dijksteel back to provide the solidity, Spence isn't a right back in a back four. Nathan Wood deserves a go in a back five if he's better on Saturday.

Wow, people calling for Lewis Wing to start????? Screw your heads back on - he's absolutely dreadful and should be nowhere near the team.

Howson, Saville and Morsy have performed well for the most part - our midfield isn't really the problem. We've had a couple of bad results, we'll turn it round.

As suggested in the thread it would be nice to see Roberts somehow incorporated into that front 3.

In a one off game I don’t see why Wing can’t come in to see how he fairs. If he’s ***** he is easily droppable again. Howson might be injured and is playing through pain according to Warnock. Saville has been poor and out of sort in last 4 games, and Morsy has looked unfit. So I see no reason why Wing can’t come in and see what he can do, like I say if he’s crap he’s an easy player to drop again. But let’s not pretend our midfield was good last night or at the weekend because it wasn’t.
