We are moving close to our first striker signing

If he stays fit he will score goals, there is no doubt about that for me. Just hope we get lucky in that he stays fit. Good both footed finisher

My understanding is it's done, one year loan deal with Newcastle paying a percentage of his wages.

Should be a good addition who has had a decent record at Championship level in the past, he'll provide mobility, industry and movement as well as being a proven goal scorer which is something we've not had in a good while.

Thanks for the info

Definitely a worthwhile signing and much better than all the loan deals last season. David Connolly anyone?

No problem with that at this level. People probably said Nugent was finished as well.

I'm fine with him as a signing, but it's a different situation than Nugent.

We signed Nugent at 30 and he was on the back of being a regular for Leicester in the Premier League, and had had 3 good Championship seasons in a row before that.

Gayle is 32, going on 33, and hasn't played regular football since 2018/19.

If it's the Gayle of the past, it's a great signing, but there's surely got to be concern with how little he's played in 3 years.

He’s a player who has pace so the worry is at 32 will he have lost that explosiveness. If he’s come to boro you can guarantee he probably has.

Hopefully he hasn’t and he can emulate his form from 4 seasons ago

Do you think he's coming in to be the main man?

Or the experienced additional striker in the Joao/Rhodes role?

(if it happens of course)

Think it would be a good addition, but probably not a starter.

It's not the same Dwight Gayle who banged in 23 goals for West Brom in 18/19. We're 4 years on from then, and he's now 32, and a player which relies quite a lot on speed/ fitness. He only played 30 minutes of league football last year, and only 500 minutes the year before that, and in 2020 did his MCL and has only scored one goal since.

He did/does have pace, yes, but he knows how to finish. That's the key attribute we've been missing.
