What does Lenihan bring to the party?

There was a sense that it was a bit of a coup when we signed him.

He doesn’t look especially solid, doesn’t display any real organisation skills in a chaotic defence, doesn’t seem to offer much leadership on the pitch and offers little from set pieces in front of goal,

Not impressed really.

My opinion - he's struggling with the 3 at the back. He's a CB in a 4 at the back system. Same as Clarke. The three don't know who to pick up, who should be doing what etc.

I said on another thread a number of players have played well for previous clubs but are looking dogsh*t at Boro.

That squad should not be bottom 3, no chance. But we are and we need to sort out why pretty quickly.

I agree he looks lost with the 3 at the back - but he did play 3 at the back for over 50% of the season with Blackburn last year.
I think the difference is he's got less cover with Giles/Jones too far up the pitch.

Havent watched any highlights, or seen the reports of the game but, was it Lenihan who under no pressure, thumped the ball to noone which ended up at the feet of a Blackburn player leading up to the corner, that resulted in their 1st goal, shocking

He made a nice pass to a Blackburn player at the start of the match, resulting in the corner that lead to the first goal.

Doesn’t go missing. Has a voice. Playing in a system with pkayers that dint know what they are doing and dont take responsibility (see mcnair, Jones, Dijksteel). Need to find a partner for him as none of the others over the past 5 years have ever taken us forward.

I called it on here when we signed him that I wasn't impressed, then said it again after seeing him play. There is a clear reason he was knocking around at Blackburn for 10 years and has very limited international experience for a poor national side at 28 years old. He's just not very good.

I think he's a good player in a team really struggling for confidence.

I could see why CW brought him in, rather than play Fry, his passing is far quicker and more decisive and fit a team playing from the back that's obviously important.

Good post

Did he not play right side of a back three last season with Blackburn? Pretty sure I remember their fans saying that was his best position..

Most of the centre backs at champo level are pretty even in terms of ability - i.e meh

You will have one or another having a good season then regressing to mean a season later

Still can't get my had around Pulis spendng 7 million on Flint purely because of his goal scoring record

Yep.

Although Blackburn's wing back system was very defensive. I don't think their centre backs were stepping into midfield or anything fancy like that.

Like the rest of them, if you ask him to concentrate on defending he's probably a pretty decent player for the championship.

That for me in a nut shell is what has been wrong with our wing back system all season, neither Giles nor Jones offer any cover. For such attacking wing backs we need proper midfield cover, which since losing Tav we haven’t had.
