What does Middlesbrough need to do to become a city?

Doesn’t sound like anyone has any real evidence that city status matters other than a short moment of pride and a bit of ego?

It would be good to know if there is anything in reality
Preston and Sunderland definitely both put a monetary value on becoming cities. They were consulted by Middlesbrough in one of its unsuccessful bids. I no longer have the details but it was in multi £millions. And we felt both new cities were very good comparisons to make. I had a small part in lovemiddlesbrough backing one of the bids.
They weren't just monetary values plucked out of thin air either they were backed up by data. They listed city upgraded shops and businesses - which meant better jobs and better service for customers. They were detailed reports. But I don't know how relevant they are today when so much has changed.
I used to have print outs but don't any longer.

Fob Middlesbrough off. To many failed attempts.

Focus on Stockton attaining City status as it's by far the more progressive of the two right now.

A greater teesside sounds a good idea. M’Bro Thornaby Stockton Billingham…under one Council.*
Also run for Capital of culture when it comes round. Plenty Teesside has to offer the world there, it was detailed in one of Bri’s threads.

* I’d be cheeky and put Yarm in but the locals would have a heart attack over house prices

*** why when I was thinking that first line up the old dickens advert comes into my head - Stockton Washington Shiremoor

Thanks for that

Just my opinion I hope you understand.
I hope Middlesbrough becomes a city asap, its my birthplace and if that's what its people want I do hope they get it.
They can rope in whoever else that wants to go in with them as Middlesbrough City, like Redcar, Marske, South Bank,Grangetown, Dormo, Lazenby, Guisborough, Saltburn etc. That will make up a fair size lump of land and population.
But please leave Stockton-on-Tees out of it, Cleveland was a bad enough experience.

If those figures are still valid then I definitely hope Middlesbrough Stockton and Redcar consider a joint bid to help the whole area

I was told a while ago, that if (unofficial Middlesbrough) Southbank, Eston, Grangetown where part of Middlesbrough instead of being lumped in with Redcar boundary, Middlesbrough would be the biggest town in Britain by a distance?

So we seem to as a region shoot ourself in the foot.

But I would just be happy to see some investment into Teesside, so if Middlesbrough and Stockton with surrounding areas wanted to make a joint bid and call it Teesside city with us all as places within, i think that would be an unstoppable bid, as the that’s a region with a population of nearly 400k.

In the 2021 census:

Middlesbrough - 143,900
Southbank - 5,433
Eston - 7,419
Grangetown - 6,388

Total - 163,140

Reading, Luton, Bolton, Swindon, Northampton and a load of other towns would still be bigger.

I presume that there are plenty of outlying areas to other towns like Reading that could be lumped in to make them bigger than a Greater Middlesbrough too.
