What does Middlesbrough need to do to become a city?

Stockton makes a much better use of the Tees than Middlesbrough. Plus SBC area is already Stockton, Billingham, Thornaby, Norton and Yarm. Stockton is more historic and with the changes on the High Street certainly more progressive thinking.

Stockton-on-Tees to become a city instead!

You are forgetting the Tees is still very much a working river at Middlesbrough - A V Dawson Port of Middlesbrough and across the Tees is Wilton Engineering are both extremely busy industrial complexes.

Rather like "Medway" we should merge Middlesbrough, Stockton, Billingham into one conurbation. Medway is made up of Gillingham, Strood, Chatham, and Rochester and is much smaller than the main Teesside conurbations.

We need to get the infrastructure and transport links right, get it properly zoned and pool resources across the area. These areas need to work together not against each other.
Perhaps we could call it Cleveland and have a County Council.

Fob Middlesbrough off. To many failed attempts.

Focus on Stockton attaining City status as it's by far the more progressive of the two right now.
But surely you are a Middlesbrough FC fan rather than Stockton Town.
Isn't the Boro the single highest profile organisation on Teesside?

Hasn't Houchen already done that?

Oh no, he's spunked millions on a 3 flights a day airport and the rest on a minibus service which seems to have vanished.

In the 2021 census:

Middlesbrough - 143,900
Southbank - 5,433
Eston - 7,419
Grangetown - 6,388

Total - 163,140

Reading, Luton, Bolton, Swindon, Northampton and a load of other towns would still be bigger.

I presume that there are plenty of outlying areas to other towns like Reading that could be lumped in to make them bigger than a Greater Middlesbrough too.
Meant to mention Teesville and Normanby..takes it 175k...not trying to be pedantic.

Its alright saying that, but I have family from Thornaby and Yarm and they get a bit tetchy when you say they are Stockton...they keep threatening to leave and its partnership of convenience being part of the council boundary.
