We've had the usual debates leading up to the Sunderland game, about whether it's a derby or not.

We know many Sunderland fans like to dismiss the game, and say that it's Boro's cup final, but I'm just genuinely curious as to what you regard as Boro's biggest game. Who do you most look forward to playing?

Of course, playing in a cup final would generally be regarded as bigger than playing any team in the league, but I'm really only thinking of the league with this poll.

Nothing magical about the word "derby".

Winning or losing Vs Leeds probably means most, but I lived in Leeds during some of our best years.

I live in Newcastle now, but we've hardly played them in my time here. I suppose they've always had a whiff of being the corporate club, so maybe I'd put them next.

We've just beaten Sunderland too often in my life for it to be that big a deal. I wouldn't call it a formality, everyone beats everyone else from time to time, but if Newcastle are the corporate juggernaut, Sunderland have always been a bit of a laughing stock.

Sunderland is the bus gotten on regularly. When they beat us is the odd occasion that you nod off and miss your stop.

I've voted other because it depends on the league situation.

If I had to pick the biggest game based on one team, then technically it would be Sunderland but it's only very slightly bigger than any other league game for me.

The biggest game of the season is the one that has the defining moment of the season...
So last season, not including the play-offs, was probably Sheff Utd away - when we beat them 3-1 they were 2nd and we were catching up in 3rd.
It could also have been Coventry at home... If Wilder didn't get beat 1-0, and beat them 3-0, would he have still been sacked? - Probably, but maybe not...

I don't think we've had our biggest game of the season this season yet, it wasn't Sunderland away, and it won't be Sunderland at home on Sunday.

I used to think Newcastle, but it's been that long since we played them and we've played Sunderland so many times recently, that it's definitely shifted in my mind.

Leeds have always been 3rd.

Yeah, it's probably a good point regarding them being a bit of a laughing stock. It riles me up when they sing those disgusting songs, so it's always a great feeling when we score against them and shut them up. I think I've always hated Sunderland more than any other club.

In many ways though, playing Newcastle always felt like a bigger deal when I was younger, maybe because I had a few mates who were Newcastle fans. That time we beat them 1-0 at the Riverside when they were in the top four was such a magical night. I barely give them a second thought these days though.

Really doesn't feel as though there's a rivalry there at all now, although that would probably change if we get back in the Premier League.

As a Yorkshireman always Leeds for me. When I started going in 76 this was always as big a rivalry as the two from Geordie land due to their success under Revie and there being a few Leeds glory fans at school. Appreciate it’s probably different for those of 90s school vintage with the Toon brigade. You would have to have been at school in the early 1900s to have been surrounded by Makem glory hunters. Many posters in their 140s on here?😉

I live in Newcastle so would love to beat them but as noted we haven’t played them for over 11 years. When we were in PL they dropped out. Hate them with a passion 😂 in terms of Other I hate Derby after the way they have behaved recently.

It's longer than that and the longest probably in history since we've played a competitive game against them. Was gutted when we drew Chelsea but I think the anticipation would have been much more on Teesside

EDIT March 2010 looks like newcastle got the South Stand

Man Utd, Spurs, Chelsea..

Cup QF, Cup Semi.. Play offs..

Man City, Liverpool..

that’s probably it tbh

Newcastle for me, but we haven't played them for so long the Tees-Tyne 'derby' is a distant memory. More reciprocated rivalry with Sunderland, they in the main genuinely don't like us whether they consider it a derby or not. Leeds doesn't really register to me despite working and living with many of their fans, we wouldn't make the top 10 of their rivalries

Exactly the same for me.
