Why do football teams wear such dull colour combinations

I think we’re very reserved in this country about colour and styles etc. As I get older I find I am willing to wear way more flamboyant shirts etc. Not trying to sound like a badass but I really don’t give a phuck! It’s just a shirt, I don’t care what people think of it.
I used to love it when they'd be ribbing mark lawrenson for his "wacky" shirts on football focus and it would just be a plain shirt with a pinstripe or something.

I think I read somewhere that the other Middlesbrough team played in green and red stripes. I would love this to become the theme for our away kits, with a nice dark burgundy and green stripe. There are so many combinations that could be used. green or burgundy socks and shorts, black shorts, white socks etc.
According to historical kits we both wore the first ironopolis kit burgundy and green. We referenced ironopolis in our promotion season with the sash.

There's a fair bit of colour variety really.

Red & White - Arsenal, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest MIDDLESBROUGH
Red & Black - Bournemouth
Red, White & Black - Manchester United, Southampton, Brentford
Red & Blue - Crystal Palace
Claret & Blue - Aston Villa, West Ham
Blue & White - Everton, Manchester City, Leicester, Chelsea, Brighton, Tottenham. (Very different blues)
Black & White - Newcastle, Fulham
Gold & Black - Wolves
White - Leeds

Norwich do the Yellow & Green thing.
Watford do the Yellow & Red thing
Luton do the Orange.
Plymouth do the Green - but there is enough green with the grass.
Bradford do the Claret & Amber
Hull do the Black & Amber

La Viola Fiorentina look pretty good in Florence purple mind, as do Anderlecht, Austria Vienna, Toulouse and Perth Glory.
Palermo look pretty in pink.

Remember Coventry for the absurdity of Chocolate Brown on a football kit.

I agree, some dull kits including boros last 2 in my opinion boring away kits. Really good to see us play in white like real madrid (not leeds).

I think spurs tonight shows why it’s prob best to not be to creative.

I do like that flu shirt though. Although I’ve always been a Fla.

Compare this to American football. Miami dolphins turquoise and silver. Denver broncos blue and orange. La raiders silver and black. Cleveland browns brown and orange.

One specific thing I didn't know about NFL until recently: every team has a white kit, and one of the 2 sides always wears it. The other team will wear a darker colour.
I think this is intended to help visibility for viewers.

However, if you know one team is going to be wearing white, it allows more scope for patterns and funky designs in the darker kits.
