Why do football teams wear such dull colour combinations

One specific thing I didn't know about NFL until recently: every team has a white kit, and one of the 2 sides always wears it. The other team will wear a darker colour.
I think this is intended to help visibility for viewers.

However, if you know one team is going to be wearing white, it allows more scope for patterns and funky designs in the darker kits.
Almost

Even long after the advent of colour television, the use of white jerseys has remained in almost every game. The NFL's current rules require that a team's home uniforms must be "either white or official team colour" throughout the season, "and visiting clubs must wear the opposite".

Red and green can be combined if done properly. See above.
One of Sydney's major rugby league clubs (South Sydney) is red and green. Sometimes with black sometimes with white. Not bad I think. Was green used from time to time as a nod to strong Irish communities? Given history then Boro wouldn't be out of place with a touch of green...GettyImages-1387634281.jpgimages-3.jpeg
