Why the statue of footballing legend Brian Clough should stay in Middlesbrough's Albert Park

My understanding (which is limited) is he couldn't wait to get away from the boro and sign for sunderland. It was all before my time so there will be others who know far more about the situation but although he played far more games for us it is extremely disappointing if that was the case. Imagine the response if shearer wanted away from newcastle to join them. I don't think he would be held in high regards on tyneside.

When you consider he was scoring at a rate of a goal a game. Alongside him Alan Peacock was also scoring over 20 a season then you wouldn't blame him for asking questions of other players and the Boro club.
When Boro keeper Esmond Million celebrated after winning a bet placed on our opponents then can you imagine how infuriated our captain and goal hero was. Million was celebrating on the coach after an away defeat. He didn't play for us again.
It later transpired we had more than one player on the make from betting on games. With our forward line we should have been near the top of the old First Division instead we never got out of the second.
Clough was bound to feel bitter. He felt he should have been backed. He scored goals at a faster rate than George Camsell but the defence let goals in at a rate faster still.
Some Boro fans actually left Ayresome for Roker with Clough. So revered was he for his incredible goal scoring.

Thanks for that Rob. Interesting insight to the club at that time.
