The Corbyn approach, what could possibly go wrong
But if a respectable figure like Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB KC followed that approach then surely everyone would see it for the wonderful fresh politics we so sorely need.

Or am I missing something again...

The Tories have weaponised smears on Starmer regarding Jimmy Savile, Rishi Sunak roaring from the benches each time.

The Tories would continue this line of attack in the run up to the next election along with their culture wars. Now, with their faux outrage they can't.

I don't like what Labour have done here, but I understand it. I also wish similar commentators would be similarly upset about what the Tories say and do.

If I had a guess, probably because Tory smears are normalised. Labour smears are fresh and new.
But isn't it also the case that Labour should be holding themselves to a much higher standard. By dropping to the gutter level it just blurs the boundary between what is acceptable and what should be condemned.

How do Labour counter the next attack? They can't take the high ground as this will be thrown straight back at them. It's a massive own goal.

Moving towards USA politics where policies are secondary to dirt digging, smears and sh*t flinging.
Why Labour feel the need to stoop this low when they are watching the Tories self destruct is mind boggling.
A worry that this is where they are actively heading and a bit of a taste of things to come if they get into government.......🤢🤢

There must be a reason they have decided to do this in the run up to the local elections. We will soon see if it has any effect, good or bad.

They've had 13 years of holding themselves to higher standards while the Tories win elections on the back of the smears. Simply defending them with facts hasn't worked in the past and won't work in the current environment any more than it has previously.

As I said, I don't like it, but can understand it given the Tories only comebacks against their record has been to state Starmer and Labour are soft on crime. The reality is the Tories don't care about crime, especially crime that doesn't effect them.

Torys can't call it out though can they? If they try they will be buried when people are reminded of what they have said, so maybe there is more to this than meets the eye.
They are doing. Interestingly. Hopefully the next move is a huge dossier of all the culture war, baity bs the Tories produce

Even setting aside the moral arguments I think it’s risky tactically personally.

The Conservative vote collapsed because of a perception that the government was self-serving and awash with sleaze and decay, whether over Partygate or Paterson or porn in the Commons. Since the events that led to this perception can hardly be denied, the Tory line tends to be that it’s not such a big deal as the other lot are just as bad. That’s why the Mail pushed beergate so hard.

That line hasn’t had traction to date because it’s demonstrably false. Beergate was careless, and it might have been better avoided, but it wasn’t systematically taking the proverbial the way the Downing Street parties were. They weren’t as bad as each other. This is. It plays into the narrative. It’s a departure from what is working and an unnecessarily dangerous gamble.
