It's not officially Christmas until I see Hans Gruber fall to his death from the top of the nakatomi plaza building.
(Of course it's a Christmas movie, got Christmas songs and everything).

Exactly, if you can't have Die Hard as a Christmas film then you're not allowed Home Alone either.
Die Hard is definitely my favourite Christmas film, honourable mentions to Bad Santa and Elf as well.

If the writer says it’s a Christmas film then it’s good enough for me. It’s not really stretching it as the film is set entirely on Christmas Eve, there is a plot Central party celebrating Christmas and the film ends with the Xmas staple Let it Snow by Sammy Cahn.

When has the release date suddenly got significance? The greatest Xmas movie of all time was released on 7th January.
Man that profits from a film being a Xmas film says it's a Xmas film shock. Unless he said it in the 80s before it was released then it clearly was never intentionally a Xmas film.It’s a Christmas film.

It was an action film that used Xmas as the reason McClane was in the building. Xmas is a McGuffin.
Look how Xmassy the poster was. It doesn't even mention Xmas.
People have convinced themselves it is a Christmas movie. At first it was an ironic joke around 2009, before then there was no talk of it being a Xmas film. It snowballed (pun intended) and now people watch it at Xmas. If that makes it a Xmas film then fine but it is clear that there was never any intention for it to be one. It's just a joke that got out of hand. It's a great film, I'd watch it at any time of the year which is another reason it's not really a Xmas film.

well if it’s a movie with relevance to Christmas, that is released in the run up to Christmas, it’s generally not hard to argue it as a Christmas movie.
If it’s released in July, and therefore seen and judged by summer cinema-goers in shorts and flip flops, that makes it a bit harder to argue for.
Which movie was released on 7th Jan? And are you sure it wasn’t just a bit late getting to New Zealand?

I love Elf but I have to agree with the OP that Klaus is an excellent festive film.
