Lee Dong Gook might not have set the world alight with us but he got over a hundred caps for South Korea and played in two World Cups. I'd dispute a 'notoriously bad' label.I don't think obscure is exactly the same as awful, is it?
Ok, there's a large overlap: if they were good, they'd play more and be better known, right?
Some of these were decent players: Smith, Zuculini, Ogbeche, Fabio all did decent jobs when they played. They were all just stopgaps and better players came back in.
Others, like Lee Dong Gook were so notoriously bad they're not obscure.

I wouldn't count him as obscure at all, his TV show in Korea probably made him better known with non-football fans than he is with those who follow the game. For us he was.
I think reasons you give make him less obscure, not a better player
An old teacher at Nunthorpe used to house Boro academy players and she had Hutchinson.Celtic 'stole' him from us shortly after that.
He actually played in the Champions League for them against Man Utd. But that was about it.
Played for a handful of random teams then disappeared in his mid-twenties (in footballing terms, not literally I don't think).
Splitting hairs, but there's also a slight difference between obscure and forgettable.I don't think obscure is exactly the same as awful, is it?

Bad though he was he was definitely not obscure. Moreover he was infamous with his own song!Lee Dong-gook
he spent 45 minutes warming up in the second half against Brighton when we got promoted. Closest he got to the pitchAgazzi never actually played either. But top marks for obscurity!
Scored though!Along with Jamal Blackman. Don’t think he play a league but played against Liverpool in the long penalty shootout cup game. Never looked like saving one.

I'd draw the line there I think. Scored one of our most important goals that season and was a fairly big name on the continent before he joined us.Fernando Amorebieta
