Why do football teams wear such dull colour combinations

Red and white. Blue and white. White. Only three teams in the premier League have colours besides these three. And two of those are claret and blue.

Compare this to American football. Miami dolphins turquoise and silver. Denver broncos blue and orange. La raiders silver and black. Cleveland browns brown and orange.

Why is this? Doesn't always seem to have been the way either. Looking at historical kits we had blue and black hoops and turquoise and burgundy with black shorts before switching to red. Newcastle played in red and black. The colours were slightly more varied in the Victorian era.

I'm wondering if the Americans employed professionals to pick out their colours whereas we were just red is a colour we will use that.

The adventurous colours of blue and white, orange and white and orange and brown.

All colour combinations in the EFL, bar that last one which is just manky.

Maybe it is because our colours carry far more meaning - heritage and history are so important to fans of a game that is in its 3rd century of organised football competition.

It's done to irritate you specifically.

Red

In 1865 a group of players met at the Clinton Arms on Nottingham's Shakespeare Street. J. S. Scrimshaw's proposal to play football instead was agreed and Nottingham Forest Football Club was formed. It was agreed at the same meeting that the club would purchase twelve tasselled caps coloured 'Garibaldi Red' (named after the leader of the Italian 'Redshirts' freedom fighters). Thus the club's official colours were established. Forest's first ever official game was played against Notts County taking place on 22 March 1866.

Forest's charitable approach helped clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to form. In 1886, Forest donated a set of football kits to help Arsenal establish themselves.

Purple and Teal

Back in the late 80’s and 90’s, the Charlotte Hornets became well known for their innovative purple and teal uniforms, an iconic look that transcended sports to become a full-fledged pop culture mainstay. But lost in the shuffle of those Starter Jackets and pinstripes were all the other sports franchises that took a stab at mirroring the Queen City’s daring new colorway.
Alexander Julian was tasked with designing the Hornets’ original uniforms heading into their first NBA season in 1988. Known for his creative outside-the-box thinking, Julian chose to go with an unconventional-for-the-time trio of teal, purple and white as the team’s primary colors. He also incorporated pinstripes into the uniforms, which was something that hadn’t been done before on a basketball jersey. Needless to say, the reception far exceeded anything Julian or the Hornets could have ever envisioned.
“I had absolutely no clue that it would be the hit that it was,” recalled Julian in a 2019 interview with Hornets.com. “There were rumors that we equaled or even topped the Bulls back in the day because of the popularity of the uniforms and the colors. I remember [former Hornets owner] George [Shinn] telling me a couple of years into this, ‘Alex, I just got back from China and there was a young man on an airplane in China wearing a Hornets hat. I got an interpreter to ask him, ‘So, you like the Hornets?’ and he responded, ‘No, I like the colors of the hat.’”

I think we’re very reserved in this country about colour and styles etc. As I get older I find I am willing to wear way more flamboyant shirts etc. Not trying to sound like a badass but I really don’t give a phuck! It’s just a shirt, I don’t care what people think of it.

I think I read somewhere that the other Middlesbrough team played in green and red stripes. I would love this to become the theme for our away kits, with a nice dark burgundy and green stripe. There are so many combinations that could be used. green or burgundy socks and shorts, black shorts, white socks etc.

Can't say I agree with mixing red and green, it's not a common combination for a reason.

But I was so disappointed with how last seasons away kit ended up.

Just plain green when it could have been a brilliant re-imagining of:

When did Luton stop wearing white? That was their normal home kit in the 80s and 90s

Meanwhile, have a look at some of these beauts.
