For me I think we try and negotiate an additional year onto his existing contract with a pay rise with a similar ‘agreement’ that was in place with Tav along the lines of if we don’t achieve promotion this season he can go.

At least that way we have the opportunity of selling him in a year if things don’t pan out rather than just let him go on a free.

Look at the potential benefit to Coventry in holding on to Gyokeres for an additional year rather than cashing him in after one good season.

Having said all that if a good offer comes in for him I think he will want to go.

This is a crucial test for Carrick now: can he build a team with the same free-flowing profile out of different materials on a severely constrained budget. With Howson getting on, he needs Barlaser to step up, and he needs Fry back to a consistent level. He needs a new right back - or to trust Dijksteel - and maybe a left back too if Wolves want too much for Giles. Most of all he needs to replace our three best, most dangerous players, Akpom, Archer and Ramsey.

If we want a genuine shot at promotion sell players like crooks who’s a bottom half championship player
 
Don’t get the vitriol towards Crooks. He’s a good Championship player and does whatever is asked of him. We are a Championship club so he’s an important player for us. Watmore similar, but we sold him to someone in a similar situation. We could have planned beyond these types of players if we had gone up, but we didn’t.
 
I don’t think there was any vitriol, think the point was about raising money and trying to keep Chuba, Crooks has a value but as I pointed out it wont be enough to fund a spending spree.
 
I like Crooks. He’s never let any of the Boro managers down he’s played under.

He will play in any position he’s asked and seems to be a very good influence around the squad.

I’m not sure he naturally fits into a position in Carrick’s way of playing so wouldn’t be surprised if he left this Summer but at the same time if he stayed and became a utility player as has been the case this season I’d be pleased for him and us.
 
I like Crooks a lot, but would be perfectly comfortable with him, Jones, McNair and Dijksteel all leaving provided we got a reasonable fee for each. Looking at the players coming to the end of their contracts and with the faith I have in our recruitment team, I'm sure we can find replacements that better fit Carrick's style.
