Akpom move

Before this season we literally told him he wasn't good enough time and time again. I'll hold my hands up and say I was one of the fans that didn't rate him - and I wasn't a minority. It was most of us.

As a club we sent him on loan to Greece, we sent him to train with the kids... I think Warnock even quoted something along the lines of him not being good enough, in public.

We didn't help drag his career out of the gutter. Akpom dragged his own career out of the gutter and we owe him nothing.

He's also been on quite an average championship wage - so he would have been a millionaire regardless - if we didn't pay his wages, another club would have.
He's coming up to 28 years of age. He's made 250 career appearances, that includes substitutions and that includes his only decent season.

He's been through so many club doors due to his inability to perform until last season. He's been on a decent wage and hasn't performed for the majority of his career. Sure he went out on loan from us, that was because he wasn't performing, not doing his best when he had the chance, and that's on the training pitch as well as match day.

One decent season and he wants to be off despite being very well paid.

My guess and I say its a guess - he wants to play at a higher level than the Championship and wants to increase his pay - he maybe has only 4 years left in his career.

For Boro's part is keep him for 1 year or receive around £13m. Its less than 50/50 chance he will renew if he does well again in 2023/24 as clubs will throw money at him.

Nobody knows what's happened. Does he want to be off or does the club want to sell him?

It's pretty much accepted that he was willing to sign a new contract ,the club didn't feel he was worth what he was asking for.
There's also a lot of damning with faint praise going on regarding Akpom and last season. He wasn't good or decent. He was the best player we'd seen in a Boro shirt in a good 15 years.

So, Chuba was actually at the ground with the squad this morning but has left since we have received 'bids'. Plural.
He has obviously left to sort things out. I wonder if Sheff Utd or another English team have outbid Lens

Carrick must be seething .

Where’s this flight of fancy come from

Its been reported in several places. Chuba himself responded to Mark Drury's comments that the contract he wanted was very high and more than Boro wanted to pay by denying that was the case, that he was willing to negotiate what he felt was a reasonable contract. Tellingly that's never been contradicted by the club.

Maybe about the fact we refused to give far and away our best player a new contract and are selling him for slightly more than we paid for George Saville?

Well maybe the equivalent of Saville and Flint...🤪
Selling him now was the only realistic option and Carrick will be 100% supportive of that, its the model that the club operates to now.
He could have signed a new contract, but the figures on offer were significantly lower than what he was looking for and what he'll earn elsewhere.
It's disappointing disappointing lose a player who's had such a great season, but that's the way it will always be.

You’re totally wrong about this mate.

Not sure why you’ve got a grievance against the guy who scored 29 goals for us last season but makes me think, with fans like these, who needs enemies.

If we did keep akpom let's not pretend, without a new deal, he would be firing on all cylinders this season as he wouldn't want to risk his big moves.

We've said it time and time again, move away from big money contracts for 3-4 years cos it pushes the wages up for everyone. I don't think this will be instant success but I think it's the right road to go down we just need to fill the gaps

Like viduka did? Load of rubbish.

I think we have to be realistic. He wasn’t going to sign a new contract on the terms we were going to offer.

Blackburn now I’m sure wished they had sold Diaz this time last year.
Championship teams can’t write of £12-15 million. Hopefully a few more might enter the fray today.

Looking back on things we did really well to get the money we did for Spence.
