Jude Bellingham

from a public mania perspective I don't think it did.
Perhaps not that but actual impact on tournament and goals scored. Rooney was a total phenomenon during Portugal 2004. If he wasn’t injured England could have won that tournament.

England didn't actually have a good tournament though, and the legacy of that tournament is incomparable. Rooney also went on to consistently fail to deliver at major tournaments despite a fairly long career. Even Gazza had Euro 96 as a sort of 'renaissance'. Not many England players had played in two major semi-finals (until the Southgate era, and even then it can only be a few).
Did England in 90? It is a bit of a stretch for me to remember well but the performances in the group stage weren’t great. Was it a Mark Wright header that got qualification?

Last minute wonder goal from Platt against Belgium. Two Linekar penalties against Cameron?

In Portugal England beat Croatia 4 - 2 and Switzerland 3 - 0. They really should have got something against a good France team too. In the quarter final, Portugal were 1 - 0 down and struggling to contain Rooney when he went off injured.

Expectations were low after Euro 88. It was different to Euro 2004 where there was a belief that, after a promising WC 2002, with Brazil/Argentina out the way we could/should win it.

In 90, they weren't great v Ireland, but Gazza dominated Netherlands (then European Champions with Gullit/Rijkaard etc) and put the ball in for Wright's header v Egypt.

Pretty sure he also put the ball in for Platt's late winner v Belgium, and set up at least 1 or 2 of the goals/penalties v Cameroon, but seemed to be the creator of every attack. Then he cried when he got booked against eventual champions W Germany, after another good display.

In my view, there was a bit more to it all than Rooney smashing 4 goals in against Switzerland & Croatia (one of which should have definitely been credited as an own goal).

Rooney was brilliant in 2004, can't knock him for that tournament. Owen was the ideal man up front for him, his movement dragged defences all over and Rooney used the space well.

We did struggle in the early stages of 1990 too, and were well outplayed by Belgium who couldn't finish, hit the post a couple of times with Schifo completely bossing the midfield.

If Real Madrid win La Liga & CL this season, then he'd definitely be in the running for Ballon D'or 2024, especially if he keeps up these insane performances and scoring these huge goals.

The lad has everything.

Why oh why didn't Gareth just start him in that Euro's final 😭 😭

Plenty of us England fans were begging him to start. His quality was there to see, even when he was much younger and inexperienced.

I think the closest I’ve seen to Bellingham from an English player is Bryan Robson. He has the same habit of popping up with important winning goals and whilst very good technically, he doesn’t do any unnecessary skills or tricks with the ball. Every touch has purpose. He’s got the leadership qualities too. It won’t be long before he’s captaining England and Real Madrid which at his age is a hell of an achievement. Hopefully he can stay clear of injuries which really limited what Robson could achieve in his career. He’s such a rarity though in that his physical and mental attributes are at the very elite level.

I think he is the real deal. He needs good people around him now. He could be anything he wants to be

Lad is going to break records so long as he is fit for most of his career.

I’d say he is a class above… but he is better than that

It's difficult to see where his limit will be at this point. He just gets better and better. There appear to be no weaknesses to his game which is incredible for a 20 year old.
