We are moving close to our first striker signing

As has been said already, he's a finisher who does his best work inside the box. He also knows how to work the box and make space for himself, occupy defenders, get across people. We didn't have that nous last season. There were tight games in which we missed good chances and suffered as a result. I doubt he'd be coming in as the 'main man' and starting every game but as part of a four- or five-man group of strikers he seems like a sensible addition IMO.

Given we need to sign 3 strikers this is a good start. He has the full summer of pre-season to get fit and up to speed, Wilder wont want him unless his attitude is right and we will also hopefully sign 2 others to compete with him.

Feels like a good start if it happens

Any striker we sign will probably only play for an hour game based on last seasons evidence. They have to be able to do a lot of closing down to become a part of Wilder's team. If we are to sign Gayle then I assume he is happy that Gayle can do this.

Is Ikpeazu out of contract or are going to have to look to move him on / integrate him into Wilder's way of playing (unlikely). I mention him as he shows Wilder's ruthlessness when it comes to players who can't cope with the off the ball requirements

Seems like a typical boro signing to me. What is the point in having Kieran Scott?
I agree it doesn't need any scouting to sign a player like that, but it doesn't mean other signings won't be more obscure.
I'd argue though that it isn't a typical Boro signing. A reliable experienced goalscorer is what we've been crying out for. Last year's striker signings were typical Boro, foreigner who doesn't deliver, and loan signings who aren't up to it.

I can't help but think that if Gayle was past it & had nothing to offer Newcastle would surely have offloaded him before now? They won't have been short of offers for him if he was available?

Surely it DOES need scouting though? He has to be researched properly before any more his committed to being spent on him. You have to find out as much information as possible before guaranteeing a single penny. Scouting goes much further than just watching games and him being based just up the road wouldn't change that.

Hard to get excited, would have liked to have seen him come in 2,3 year ago but if you think of him replacing Connolly then that's an improvement straight away.

If we just improve on what we had with each new signing, we'll be alright next year.

Yep you're right.

But i think the post i was responding to was suggesting that they were expecting something more obscure

He may have been scouted though.

Ffs I though we meant to have a global scouting network yet sign geordie rejects
so all signings now have to be from somewhere else, even if the club think there's a good option on the doorstep? Perhaps we'll do a bit of both, there''s a thought.
