We are moving close to our first striker signing

I think this is a good move for both parties.
He knows where the back of the net and also knows the Championship, he is settled in the area so won't be the upheaval of moving house for him on a personal level, he is obviously still hungry to play football or he could of quite easily sat in the stands at Newcastle getting paid for it. For me especially if its a loan it is a low risk signing with more potential positives than negatives. Like somebody else said we are not in a position to buy ready made players in the peak with bags of championship experience, especially with the huge rebuild we need. We need to look at the players who are rather up and coming in the game with potential, unproven foreign players, or players slightly past peak. All have risk factors for various reasons and some probably won't work out but that is just where we are at as a club, but as we have seen with past experiences of signings big fee's and reputation doesn't guarantee a player who will do the job, some of our best signings in recent years have been low fee low risk signings.

He's not been injured much since his MCL in 2020, so he would have been training every week and be fit, but it's the intensity of matches which he's probably missed, and especially that which comes with 46 games in the Champo.

He looks a "fit" lad though, so hopefully he'll be alright, but even if not he's a good addition for a rotation of 3-4 strikers.

We do need a no 1 though, and I'm guessing that's going to come once we get the Spence money, which I hope we get finalised in the next week or two.
Worry is Balogun and Connolly had both played barely any competitive football before we signed them and they still didnt look up to speed by the end of the season, suppose its a different situation with Gayle and he should get a full pre season if we sign him this week. Regardless its a huge upgrade on last seaso

so are we expecting Gayle, Watmore, Coburn + 1 more?
Or Coburn out on loan?
And this assumes we can move on Uche and Akpom

A very different situation. He's experienced, they had barely played any competitive football ever, especially Balogun

"You don't need to scout someone like Dwight Gayle"

"The only thing that needs looking at is his fitness and ability to play in the Championship at this stage of his career."

So you DO need to scout him then. Unless you think committing to a loan fee, wages and bonuses over the course of a year without doing your due diligence first is a good idea.
Where are going to go and watch him ? He's hardly played a competitive game for months...It's like saying your going to scout Harry Kane.
Ridiculous 🙄

It's also worth noting that in the champo there will be a 4 week shut down from 12 Nov to 10th Dec for the world cup. That will be a good recouperation period for 30 somethings, stop them getting burn out.
