We are moving close to our first striker signing

I can see him being a real asset in the box. Obvious doubts about his ability to press at a high tempo for 90 mins but as has been said above it is unusual for our strikers to play a full game. Gyorkores looks a strong lad so will be a good foil.

Think it would be a good addition, but probably not a starter.

It's not the same Dwight Gayle who banged in 23 goals for West Brom in 18/19. We're 4 years on from then, and he's now 32, and a player which relies quite a lot on speed/ fitness. He only played 30 minutes of league football last year, and only 500 minutes the year before that, and in 2020 did his MCL and has only scored one goal since.
well at least he won't be knackered and burnt out hopefully he will be chomping at the bit for the Boro :)

He may have been scouted though.
I would hope he has!

I just had or have the impression from some posts that we shouldn't be signing players such as Gayle because we have a director of football, or because he's based just up the road. It doesn't matter whether he's based in Newcastle, New Orleans or Norrköping, if he's what the manager wants and the club can afford it then that's the player that should be signed IMO.

You don't need to scout someone like Dwight Gayle for goodness sake, his record is there for all to see. We know all about him, he's played for numerous clubs and different managers. I'm sure we have players who have played with, or against him many times.
The only thing that needs looking at is his fitness and ability to play in the Championship at this stage of his career.
Many Thanks 👍

So you DO need to scout him then. Unless you think committing to a loan fee, wages and bonuses over the course of a year without doing your due diligence first is a good idea.

Anyone questioning age just needs to look at Billy Sharp and even the numbers Mcgoldrick was putting out under Wilder.
If Gayle 'Didnt give a sh*t' I don't think he'd have scored 59 Championship goals in 100 games.

At this level in and around the box he is lethal.
We play with 2 up top, someone like Gyorkes along side him and there's potential for something extremely lethal up top. Sometimes you can forgive a lack of closing down If when that one chance arrives he buries it.

You also forget if we get this done fairly quickly, he'll have pre season to build his fitness. He has my full backing. UTFB

not sure really. if he is anywhere near his best then he is a great asset, but it's hard to know what sort of shape he is in.

so all signings now have to be from somewhere else, even if the club think there's a good option on the doorstep? Perhaps we'll do a bit of both, there''s a thought.
We shouldn't be helping out Saudi backed Newcastle have to stay clear as they are owned by killers worse than Putin

We were due to sign Kalvin Philips from leeds in a swap deal for Joe Lumley but Leeds is too close to Boro so weve had to bin it off!

Of course there is going to be doubts, we are a championship club signing a player who didn't cut it (for whatever reasons)in the prem, on Loan.

EVERY player we sign is going to have a ? over his head. We aren't in a position to sign players who are guaranteed quality/right age/ no question marks over fitness etc etc.

He has proven he can stick the ball in the back of the net, just gotta hope the other factors don't limit his effectiveness.

For what its worth i see the fact he hasn't played much football the last few years as a good thing, he may be 32 but he should be fresher and less battle worn!

I hope I'm proven wrong and he has another 20 goals season, but this isn't the striker I was hoping for.
Nearly 33, only 30 minutes of league football in total last season, and only played a full 90 minutes 3 times in the last 3 years...

Gyokores (or Riss) as the main man.......

With Twine to rotate in and out as required?

Watmore chases them around for 60 minutes to knacker them out, Gayle comes on to slot in a quick brace.

Lovely.

we'll be looking at bringing in another one or two strikers on top of this
