Nathan Wood

I thought he had a poor game too. He was dispossessed a few times in bad areas and was at fault for the first goal. Should have headed it away unless the keeper called for it behind him. But he seemed to either misjudge or duck under Jones's cross.

Second time I’ve seen him against us, both times it’s been the same thing - good passing range but suspect defending. Looks like the kind of guy you’d ask your strikers to target.

A few times he put himself in problems yesterday by misreading the flight of the ball. As soon as we apply pressure on him the panic seems to set in.

He’s still young and developing but he’s not looked at patch on Fry, Gibson or Wheater for my money

He was poor, against a team that didn't really offer much. Haven't ever been impressed with him when I've seen him play against us, or in any of Swansea's her games.

As a teesside lad I hope he kicks on, and makes it at the top level, as he does have the physical attributes, but I don't see it.

I was surprised when it was reported Southampton had bid £10m or were going to? for him.

The Gazette said we had quite a big sell on percentage.

If he was not born in Middlesbrough you would not even be talking about him.

Spectacularly average player.

Every player we have in our squad who could potentially play at CB is better than him. To my count that would make him 7th choice.

Don't know why Boro fans keep talking about him

It's a bit more than his just being born here. He played for us and wd let him go.

So it's a sort of FOMO thing; fans are always looking to see if we missed out when we moved him on. I don't think we did.

In theory he should be decent. Strong, fast, good in the air, not bad on the deck for a young lad.

But he isn't very good....yet. He could yet shock us.

He did something yesterday I constantly hope our centre backs would do. When he had the ball at the back and everyone was marked he brought the ball out of defence himself and forced players to come to him releasing others for the pass. A few times he simply carried it further and further forward creating opportunities in our half. Really good to watch and a key way to break down the tight marking we constantly face in the Championship. Sadly our centre back only do the side to side or long hoof. It’s almost like our Centre Backs will be fined for carrying a ball over the half way line

It's probably intentionally that way for tactical reasons, so if there is a turnover then we don't have all defenders out of position.

We've got 2 DMs to do that job, the centre backs need to find them or the wide players, and keep moving the ball until the opposition has a gap.

A passed ball goes quicker than a carried ball.

A passed ball sideways may go quicker but it simply allows the opposition to sit into their defensive system and time and time again we pass and pass to no effect. If we could let our centre backs have a bit of freedom to carry the ball out from the back we would force the opposition out of their defensive positions to address the ball carrier.

he looked poor in what was a very poor team effort. I think he definitely made the wrong choice to join the Swans, who were after their relegation a team very much on the decline. He's a big unit who can run with the ball but that's about it I'm afraid.

But VDB has been part of a terrible defence for us all season and we rate him... our defence has massively improved with him injured, but I think that is coincidence rather than cause...

That's the sort of thing a professional coach/scout needs to pick apart - some players have great individual skill/ability but struggle to improve a team.
I'm not sure that's true. VDB was a vital part of the first part of this good run we've been on. Without him, I think we'd have conceded against QPR and Birmingham and potentially only got one point from those games. I'm convinced we'd have still kept clean sheets against Sheff Wed and Swansea with him in the team.
He also played in most of the games in the run in the autumn when we won 10 out of 13 games or something, but didn't feature much at all in our terrible start.
In short I'm saying, not only is he a very good individual talent but he definitely improves the team as well.

It’s more complicated than that, we want CDMs to get between the line of the attacking players and midfielders. A Cb coming out with the ball can drive beyond the strikers and draw the opposing midfielders making it easier for our midfielder to find space

CDM? Is there a position called LDM or RDM? If so can I have a few examples of players who played there?

There are central midfielder cm and lm and rm. A CDM sits in front of the back 4 and doesn’t progress too far forward. The D is what differentiates from a regular CM not the C 🤦‍♂️

I’m guessing your point is “stop over analysing and over complicating, footballs easy”?

DM then?
