Ah the Russian Olympics which also saw a gold and silver as I recall for the scottish sprinter, Alan Wells. 2 medals he would never have got if the yanks had been there.

True - it was less than 2 weeks later in Koblenz. As mentioned in the Grauniad article below, one of the Americans actually came over to Wells after the race and told him:

“For what it’s worth, Allan, you’re the Olympic champion and you would have been Olympic champion no matter who you ran against in Moscow.”

See earlier posts - as they mention, Wells beat all the top US 100m sprinters less than two weeks later in Koblenz and one of the US athletes actually stated that Wells would have won no matter who was in Moscow.
