Ajax line up announced

I think he'd struggle to repeat last season numbers. If he gets half that amount that is good going for him.last season was a one of be surprised if he repeat that again I think latte will score more once he finds his feet he looks like he's improving.

Just saw the other thread that he's coming on and going up front.

He's a number 10. Didn't Ajax literally invent, and will always play 4-3-3 come hell or high water?

You'd think somebody somewhere would have considered that.

I'm starting to get the impression that there was a certain amount of underhand stuff going on between his agent and Ajax's director of football.

I think the problem with Akpom is that you have to build a team around him. He's an old-fashioned second-striker, deep-lying striker type who loves to hang out on the right by the touchline. He needs to play with a strike partner, ideally someone pacey who can play off the shoulder of the last defender. He's strong on the ball but not really a target man. A lot of players don't really fit neatly into pigeon holes when it comes to football formations and he's definitely one of them.

Probably you could play him in a version of 4-3-3 if he's allowed to drift deep and right while the wide right player cuts in.

That's all well and good but it sort of looks as though the manager never actually wanted him and has no interest in adapting his team. Means Chuba's going to have a struggle to convince anyone. Odds are he ends up on loan at Sheffield Utd in January. I think he could make it at Ajax. I don't think he's a one season wonder, but he will need a lucky break or a change of manager.

I'm sure if we're in the top-6 come Christmas, which means we will have gone on a very good run, that we'll explore bringing him back on loan but that feels like it might put a vast amount of pressure on him in a way that could unbalance a team which, by definition, will have been doing well without him.

It's mad. Happens all the time. But with Akpom it's even more ridiculous given his career history. You don't exactly have to do extensive background checks into his career to find out he struggled until being moved into a number 10 role.

It's like they've spent £12m on the player who couldn't nail down a place as a centre forward and who was little more than decent playing wide in an inferior greek league. Not the one who tore up the championship playing as a 10.

Also a bit of a question mark over Akpom and his agent's decision making. I know money talks but did they not discuss with Ajax what their plans were for him, where they saw him fitting in etc? I suppose he was probably going to back himself whatever, but them not using a system that includes his best position (again, particularly given his career history) must have been of some concern surely?

Akpom was never going to turn down a chance to play for Ajax.

Its a massive shame when he has joined them, and how he has been received, but I imagine the state of the club at the moment is part of the reason they are looking at players like Chuba.

But its a bit of a fluke move for him, something to tell the grandkids about! ... it'll always be on the CV!

It's like Liverpool watch Zenden dominate the midfield against them, sign him and bang him out on the left wing. If only they'd listened to the song.
