AND IT's REDCAR

You've got the wrong college, Durham Uni opened Stockton campus as part of the regeneration.

You're talking about Teesside Uni which had been there for a long time, formerly Teesside Poly.
Ah Ok, but that was only an annex. It always belonged to Durham.
Anyway I can't see them snatching away the freeport or the treasury.

Freeport’s are basically a cash flow or a bonded warehouse operation. They tried them before but wound them up as economically they did little but switch the location of economic activity within the country they operate.
I’ll look forward to any inward investment from outside the UK otherwise it’s basically taking the bread out of someone else’s mouth. So beyond the satisfaction of sticking it up the Jawdees it’s a bit underwhelming tbh.

As for Treasury North do the numbers make up for all the HMRC jobs that were lost a few years ago as they went South?

Well if seems sunderland echo disagree with you as well.

Disappointment as trio of ports miss out on Government backing to bring in more cash and boost jobs

The leaders of North East ports which missed out on being awarded Freeport status have said it would have been a “once in a generation opportunity to transform the lives of millions”.

Transform the lives of millions? The North East has 2 million people. Would every one of them have had their lives transformed?

This.

Plus organised crime.

And less tax take for the likes of the NHS.

So where’s the down side in inward. Central govt investment coming to teesside that’s what I don’t get how can it be a bad thing a negative thing as opposed to the alternative of b***r all.

Pravda piece from the Northern Echo parrots the party line without any analysis or criticism.

I especially love the line about the environment and workers rights. Keep the cattle calm before the slaughter.

"
By spreading out the Freeport maximum benefit can be gained for the people of Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

The Teesside Freeport will create, reportedly, 18,000 skilled, good-quality jobs within five years, boost the local economy by £3.4billion and support offshore wind, clean energy, chemicals and process, and advanced manufacturing sectors.

It also offers the opportunity to reshore good-quality manufacturing jobs from overseas.

All without reducing environmental protections or workers’ rights.

Covering 4,500 acres, the equivalent of 2,550 football pitches, the Teesside Freeport will be the biggest in the UK and will increase inward investment into Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool by over £1.4 billion.

Areas given Freeport status within the region would benefit from a wide package of tax reliefs, simplified customs procedures, streamlined planning processes to boost redevelopment and government support to promote regeneration and innovation."

So we should give the money Newcastle and sunderland then yes much better

I honestly despair of some on here at times.
As far as the government are concerned it makes no financial difference where the money goes as the evidence indicates any financial benefits are local only and are off-set by mirrored defecits elsewhere.

After all if freeports did bring benfits with no downsides they would be everywhere wouldn't they?

The government has plumped for Teesside for political gain only. Bear in mind they are a gang of con-men and con-women and you won't go far wrong.

There will be people in Newcastle & Sunderland who will swallow anything, uncritically, and there will be people who look at the people making promises and ask questions.

As has already been mentioned, Nissan was a massive success. If I lived in Sunderland I'd have more faith in the leadership than I have for those who 'delivered' Middlehaven in the mid-to-late 90s.

And that's cross party.

If a city or town in the South had been given this status and we had been told we had missed out this board would be in meltdown.
There would be loads of posts about how the government don't care ,lots of "the tories dont give a toss about us posts.
Lots of areas around Britain are gutted they missed out after campaigning for over a year to be chosen. As I have already said before I can't believe that it's a Conservative government giving our area something that could potentially help us transform the region but I'm glad they have.

London was one of the eight.

And rightly so. Being overlooked would have been a kick in the teeth.

That doesn't mean it isn't worth looking at what's been offered and being wary of 'Greeks bearing gifts'.

I'm constantly astounded by how good the commentators on away matches think Boro are. If nothing else, Tees not travelling for commentary has opened my eyes to how Boro are perceived elsewhere.

It comes from a different context and is equally valid to the perception of Boro fans who've watched the team over the past few seasons.

Similarly, not getting the Free Port is a different argument to getting it and complaining that it's being advertised as something that it's not.

It’s a completely different free port model that wouldn’t be allowed under the EU rules. Read about tariff inversions
What's the difference? And why are we lead to belive by the chancellor that we couldn't have freeports in the EU. I would call that lying.

I wonder how many of those whinging and sniping like fck on the various threads about the news today would be whinging and sniping like fck if the Freeport had gone to Wear-Tyneside and the treasury jobs had gone to Leeds. It’s wearisome in the extreme. Why not just think positively for once about something for our area and see where it takes us. The past has gone, leave it there and look forward. If it does, as some seem to hope, turn into a white elephant with absolutely no discernible benefits to the local area then by all means whinge and snipe away; until then give it a rest and see what transpires over the next few years. I don’t for one minute profess to be an expert on this (or anything for that matter) but I am happy for what appears to be good news and recognition for my area of the world. Let’s try and be positive eh? At least until there is reason to whinge and snipe.

I've more or less answerd that two posts above yours.

It HAS come here. That can't just be the end of the story though. We should still be holding the chancellor and his governement to account.

Interestingly, there is a whole load of negativity towards the 'Free Port' idea that isn't coming from Teesside:

Charter cities bad, charter cities good?.....who knows? Depends on your point of view. I’m not an expert as I said, this article seems more positive....?

I guess we’ll find out in time. Ultimately the rich will always get richer / want more. It was ever thus right back to when Adam was a lad.
