Because it's only a free kick if it's kicked back to the keeper using the foot. Only exception is when it's manufactured, IE flicking the ball up and heading it.

Unless the referee judges it was a deliberate trick used to circumvent the law. Which can include getting down onto the ground so you can use your knee rather than your foot. No ref's going to give that in virtually the last minute of a World Cup Final though.
