Azeem Rafiq in antisemitism storm

What did bumble say? I’d not heard about that

Apparently he phoned Rafiq personally the night the story came out
Undermines his credibility and makes his case weaker despite the fact he’s apologised. Perhaps he should have declared this beforehand, he knew of the existence of these messages at all times when he has been casting aspersions on individuals.

Racism needs to be rooted out. It applies to everyone, full stop.

surely if he knew of / remembered their existence, he would have deleted them before they were found

Don't make excuses for him Alex, he is as in the wrong as those who abused him. All of it needs stamping on.

Well he said that Gale and Moxon should be sacked and it looks like that's happening according to that article. No mention of Ballance getting the boot in the papers.

I very much doubt is G & M said sorry now Rafiq would support them staying with YCCC.
It’s sounds like the facilitated and orchestrated racism, you wouldn’t expect they would keep their jobs

You’re absolutely right, it does.

im not making excuses. I’m just saying Rafiq would have deleted the messages already if he was aware of sending them… before all this publicity.

im glad he didn’t remember, in a way, as it highlights how widespread the problem is

Probably all of them! I think we in England have a bigger problem most but racism is everywhere. We aren't very tolerant and love blaming Johnny Foreigner - but that's probably a different debate for a different thread!

You see that’s where I think you’re wrong. I’ve lived overseas in Asia and Europe for nearly a decade, and I’m reasonably well travelled and have certainly socialised and worked with countless people from every continent. Most countries seem to blame others for their problems, with or without justification, we’re not unique in that respect.

The UK has problems, but the fact is these problems are in the news, there are people addressing them and there is constant debate and our laws allow issues of inequality/injustice to be aired and discussed. The democracies of the ‘west’ all have issues, some to do with historic colonialism, significant immigration etc, but tolerance to others is far higher than pretty much anywhere else. Just look around the world and societies are rarely as multi-cultural and peaceful as ours are. I’m not denying we have much to do, the Euros showed me that, but England is one of the best places in the world to be a minority and it will continue getting better despite some of our awful politicians and public figures.

This part concerns me. Rafiq is effectively deciding what the punishments should be. He wants rid of Gale and Moxon but happy for Balance to continue.

Rafiq should have no say in what the punishments are.
Whilst I sort of agree that it is not upto Rafiq to decide the punishments, the difference between Ballance , Gale and Moxon is that Gale and Moxon are management who have a responsibility to set the tone of the club. Ballance is now 'just' a player who can be disciplined by the management team.

Rafiq has said from the start that his whole complaint is not about individuals but the whole ethos at Yorkshire CCC which Gale and Moxon are going to struggle to be involved in.

there is a level of hypocrisy to rafiq. He needs to take a long hard look at himself in terms of his behaviour and seek the right help as well

the media seem hell bent on getting this racism under the carpet

I find it amazing people think rafiq would remember that specific conversation in 2009. If he had those views he probably didn’t give a second thought about being anti-Semitic, which proves a bigger problem with his own attitudes

If anything it makes rafiq braver for coming out as he did. He probably knew his past would get brought up and his prepared to sacrifice himself.

I’m not sure that I agree, Rafiq has had a huge amount of positive coverage across all forms of media.

I don't think there's anything brave about him whatsoever. From remembering what @indeedido said he was pretty spot on In his assessment of the man. He's as bad as the people who abused him and others if not worse.

It’s explained early in the thread

just because rafiq a bad apple doesn’t deflect from the abuse he raised
I wasn't deflecting from that gaz whatsoever, all absue is abhorrent and should never happen. Rafiq has proven himself to he as low as the other racists and should also he held to account. He isn't brave or courageous he's a racist along with the rest of them. They should all feel the heat for it.

So somebody who is doing bad things can not be brave in other things?

I’ve said as much. So we agree to be the first to whilstleblow something is quite brave especially if it brings into play your own cowardliness then?
Yes of course it can but not in this case, nobody comes out of this with any bravery or any credit. Bin the lot of them.
