Saville is miles better when he’s playing alongside Howson. It’s a very good goal that because he had a hell of a long time to think about it. Was a lovely finish.
Yeah agreed. Thought Morsy's discipline was excellent after he got booked so early clearly learnt from the home game where they wound him up. He has great composure on the ball.

Excellent performance, could've won it by a couple. 6 minutes extra time seemed extreme but for once I was confident we'd see it out
Well done Boro!
Ave to admit my heart was in my mouth for the final few minutes once they scored, I kept thinking of the chances we had & missed

Yep. Been critical of Morsy of late but thought he was very good tonight after initially been disappointed with his early booking. Decent strike in the second half too. He’s bound to score soon

That's generally how I always feel about Boro but today we seemed so much better than them. Just a bit rubbish we conceded that goal. Professional performance

Morsy had a very goid game, he just does the simple things easy, gets about the pitch, great signing

He is a super holding midfield player. He was my ideal replacement for the Clayton role. He has been getting some unfair criticism lately for me. He was excellent with Howson and Saville gelling in the middle really well. Once we get pace on the right (i assume we will) and move Tav behind the striker we will get in the top 6 and stay there imho

Nottingham Forest 1 Middlesbrough 2 - Reds' unbeaten run ends on miserable night at City Ground

A late Loic Mbe Soh goal was not enough as Yuri Ribeiro was sent off late on for Chris Hughton's side

Ten-man Nottingham Forest underlined why boss Chris Hughton is eager to strengthen his attack in the January transfer window as they were beaten 2-1 by Middlesbrough.

Former Forest striker Britt Assombalonga had given Neil Warnock’s side the lead in the first half when he swept home Jonny Howson’s cross.

Assombalonga, whom Forest sold to Boro for £15m in 2017, almost made it two when his header crashed off the woodwork following an excellent cross from Paddy McNair.

Hughton’s side desperately tried to engineer a way back into the game, and Ryan Yates headed over the bar from a Cafu free-kick as they failed to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

The Forest boss decided action was needed at the break as he sent on Lyle Taylor to join Lewis Grabban in attack, but it failed to trigger the response he was looking for.

It was left to George Saville to double Boro’s lead when Assombalonga held the ball up brilliantly on the halfway line, which allowed Marcus Tavernier to slide a pass into George Saville.

Joe Worrall made a desperate lunge to stop it, but Saville raced clean through on goal to dispatch a low finish across Brice Samba and into the bottom corner.

Marc Bola almost made it three as Boro began to enjoy themselves, as his long-range drive cannoned off the bar, while Samba was forced to claw away a fierce effort from Sam Morsy.

Loic Mbe Soh scored with Forest’s only shot on target in stoppage time when he connected superbly with a cross from Joe Lolley, who had also been sent on from the bench.

But on a night when the Reds lost their seven-game unbeaten run, left-back Yuri Ribeiro capped off a dismal evening when he saw red for a needless clash with Assombalonga.

To go to a team that haven't lost in 7 and make them look ordinary was great stuff; clearly on Sat they weren't fully fit and can give them the benefit of the doubt. Fancy us to win the next 2 and then it's at Norwich where we should've beaten them at home.

Let’s go!

Good result - one minor observation of our manager is he tends not to use substitutes in a tactical manner at about eighty minutes the game was petering out I was just waiting for the subs like all other teams do just to kill some time , slow things down, disrupt the game.just to break up play. I’ve noticed a few times this season he doesn’t seem to do that. We won which is great but I think he could make better use of subs - if he makes some subs I don’t think they get their goal and we win comfortably rather than sweating for the last five odd minutes.
Thought the same, Tav was knackered and if spence had come on a few minutes earlier I doubt that cross would have happened which caused the goal. Saying that they could have played all night and wouldn’t have scored again, we were brilliant tonight

More frustrating that we lost on Saturday, Birmingham are losing yet again.

Karanka's job is hanging on by a thread.

I have had this almost superstitious nervousness whenever the Boro play at the City Ground having been psychologically damaged by seeing Jack Charlton's (almost) Invincibles suffer a shock 1-5 reverse there on my first ever visit to Nottingham in 1974. Even after living in West Bridgford for 24 years-oh the irony- and developing a bit of a soft spot for my local team, unless they're playing the Boro of course, has that nervousness gone away. So I always prepare myself for the worst on every visit and let's face it, justifiably on a few occasions over the years. But it makes the rare wins so much sweeter. Of course, ever the pessimist, I feared the worst when Forest pulled one back and had to cheat and put Sky on again to calm my nerves. But feeling so good now, even though it's only Wednesday, I might even have a beer! UTB!

Nottingham Forest lost their first game of the year as Middlesbrough ran out 2-1 winners at The City Ground this evening.

Britt Assombalonga’s first-half strike and George Saville’s early second-half goal put the visitors two goals ahead before Loic Mbe Soh headed his first goal for The Reds in injury-time with a cushioned header.

Yuri Ribeiro was shown a late red card to compound a disappointing evening on Trentside in which Forest were second best against a strong Boro side.
Chris Hughton named an unchanged side following Saturdays impressive 3-1 victory over Millwall at The City Ground, with Alex Mighten and Sammy Ameobi flanking Lewis Grabban against Neil Warnock’s side.

Middlesbrough started the brightest of the two teams and came close to going ahead within the opening three minutes. A loose Forest throw-in was picked up by Marcus Tavernier before the winger cut inside and forced Brice Samba into a quick save.

It wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken. Former Red Assombalonga was the scorer from close range after being left unmarked by The Reds defenders inside the area. A small spell of possession ended up with Jonny Howson delivering a perfect low cross for the 28-year-old to tuck the ball under Samba.

Forest reacted well to the goal, with Grabban and Ryan Yates both failing to test Marcus Bettinelli on separate occasions as Hughton’s side began to grow into the tight affair.
However, it was Middlesbrough who came the closest to scoring again through another Assombalonga chance. The striker’s thunderous header cannoned off the post from point-blank range and onto Samba, before fortunately looping over the goal and out for a corner.

Hughton introduced Lyle Taylor to the proceedings at the break as The Reds went searching for a way back into the game, but it was Warnock’s side who struck next. In the opening stages of the second half, a quick counter-attack concluded in Saville slotting the ball into the bottom corner to kill any momentum for Hughton’s men after the interval.

The Reds responded positively to Saville’s fourth goal of the season, with Anthony Knockaert being introduced and nearly making an instant impact. His corner was headed away only to Sammy Ameobi, but the winger couldn’t add to his brace over Millwall and saw his effort sail wide of goal.

The crossbar came to The Reds’ rescue just after the hour mark when Marc Bola’s fierce driven run and strike beat Samba before shooting up into the air from the crossbar. Boro had more chances to add to their lead, but Sam Morsy and Howson were unable to direct their efforts on target.

The Reds’ did grab a consolation in the third minute of injury time when substitute Joe Lolley delivered a brilliant cross for Mbe Soh to halve the deficit, but it came too late for the hosts.

With the game almost up, Ribeiro was shown a straight red card for a clash near the corner flag as Middlesbrough ran the clock down, with The Reds' seven game unbeaten run coming to a halt.

I wanted Morsy subbing at half time because I was that nervous about him getting sent off, but in fairness to him, he controlled himself well after the first booking.

Not many performances I'd fault today.
