Boro's most unappreciated players

A player i always think is forgotten about a little is Nick Barmby. Massive player for us that first premier league season under Robson and a huge signing for a newly promoted club.

Hamilton Ricard. Excellent scoring recored in the premier league, plenty of skill and power, yet some still believe he was useless, probably based on his initial struggle.

Mainly for his abysmal performances in the promotion season, he was god damn awful, I was more annoyed at Robson for persiting with him when Alun Armstrong looked a better option.

Premier league was a different story once he had settled in, but he was aways very hit and miss, one game hed be a world beater, next hed be like Yakubu on his way out.

I think that's a little unfair on the hit and miss front, certainly in 98/99 through 99/00 he was a fairly consistent threat for the most part.

He's some of his best goals for anyone with time on their hands. I love the nutmeg on Petit around 2 mins

Isn't it strange that none of the promotion team from 2015/16 are deemed to be under appreciated? Was trying to think of one but the best I could come up with would be Nsue but even then he was a bit of a fan favourite.

Alway thought Chris Riggott doesn't get enough praise for our run from 2004/2006. Loved him alongside Southgate.

Stuani was incredibly unappreciated at the time.

It's just since he left us that people have pretended that they always knew he was the best striker at the club and was wasted on the wing.
People moaned about him all the time, but his relative success at Girona has led to a rewriting of history.

He still had his supporters, before somebody jumps in and says they always believed in him.

The clown in charge brought that on.

Robbie Mustoe

He got loads of stick from the North Stand but was always a favourite of mine.

Not sure Boateng was under-rated - the fans always loved him. a great player.
Agree re: Boateng. Not sure I remember Mustoe getting loads of stick though. He might have been under-rated by some but fairly sure he was universally liked.

Kike is another who is probably more appreciated now in hindsight than he was when he was here.

He had his limitations, but he could at least lead the line properly and occupy a defence. Unlike many of the AWOL strikers we've had since.

Nugent too maybe? He wasn't prolific, but no one had more combined goals and assists that promotion season.

I agree about a few already mentioned, but I have not as yet met a Boro fan who didn’t love Robbie Mustoe, so don’t understand his inclusion.

A player I always liked and gave 100% but many seemed to feel the opposite was Derek Whyte.

Agree on Mustoe, he was universally popular.
Derek Whyte did ok first season back in the prem in 95/96, but struggled a bit after that. I always enjoyed his vertical clearences though.

John Wark was someone I liked (not necessarily for his time in a boro shirt, admittedly) but was never really appreciated.

I know that this will have been done before but was watching a video this morning of Boro beating Derby 4-0 in 2001.

Was amazed to see Vickers playing as in my mind he left sometime around 98/99.

Made me think that he is probably one of our more unappreciated players from recent years. Was never outstanding but similarly was with us for 8-yrs and rarely let us down in that period. Played over 250 games for us in that time which is pretty impressive given some of the signings that we were making around that time.

Which other Boro players deserve a bit more recognition for their efforts for the club
Vickers was a liability in the prem
