Britt etc - free transfer

It was hilarious that most of the texts on BBC Tees last night were criticising Assombalonga, despite the fact he was only on for 20 minutes and it was by far our most comfortable win in ages.

People definitely just want somebody to whinge about, it's relentless.
Maybe for some; others may want to see a bit more on the park. Personally I thought he did what he had to do yesterday albeit there was one possible pass that could have been better than the shot he tried to take.

Yes but both are on big wages so that's why it just might work.
ie, both clubs are stuck shelling out high wages so why not make a change???
Short term - yes again, that's why a quick deal could be set up in Jan.
It even helps that we are at opposite ends of the table (hurrah) so there are no issues regards helping out a direct competitor.

Btw - Grabban was a name that just popped into my head as an example.
Just think it looks like Britt will be off anyway in May so it would be a low risk option.

In terms of a fee did anyone notice the keeper who recently left Stoke?
They got £500k - £1m for him - last year of contract on big wages - but him leaving gave them wriggle room regarding FFP.
Hard to stomach the reduction of asset value for everyone concerned, but sometimes for the best.
Jack Butland - that's the gadgie!

I think the reality is Britt has to go because of his high wages. If he was scoring more, then it would be a more difficult decision. I was surprised he was offered the armband, but I suspect it was as a motivator, and to get more out of him. Fletcher should be retained, I believe he offers more in link up play and was improving until his injury. I'm sure the club will already be looking for a replacement, but I've no idea who.

I'd retain Fletcher. I almost think he could be one of the ones Warnock mentioned about hoping to secure in the next few weeks (maybe Johnson as well).

He's young enough and is athletic and mobile. That said the size of the lad means he should be more of a 'bully' and dominant in the air. Hopefully he's hit the weights on his 3 months off😉

To be fair to Assombalonga we have never really played to his strengths. How many times under Pulis (and Woodgate) did he see the ball just being hoofed forward sky high from the back whilst he was the only player upfront.

When we signed him there were a number of goal compilation clips knocking around and they all featured moves where he was hanging on the last defender and running through onto through balls with players in support.

Its fair comment that he hasn't scored the goals that his transfer fee/wages would suggest he should but its not his fault MFC were happy to throw money at him. That said I wouldn't offer him a new contract now. Best for both parties that he moves on but I wouldn't let him go in January unless we had replacements signed up first.

I don't agree. Although his scoring record was ok, as a team we were hot and cold, it was clear after those 23ish games under Monk that Britt was a poor footballer but would score a few. That if he didn't score he was a liability to the team. Even though he looked like he would get around 20, I didn't warm to him at all. He missed some absolute sitters as well in those games that cost us points. For 15m I was expecting more.
I agree he has never looked like a £16m forward, but under Monk he was scoring regularly, but then we couldnt keep them out at the other end.

Britt's current market value is negative. We could not give him away without a payoff or a wage subsidy, as no club would pay his contracted salary.
