Can anyone explain the logic of SUV vehicles?

It hasn't been successfully achieved yet. They simply don't make sense.

It's a bit like the Captain Tom thing and the Wagatha Christie case. I still don't get the latter by the way, no one could explain it. The Captain Tom thing did unravel where it did begin to make sense. But it was initially something that couldn't be explained.

Anyway, just a note - please don't complicate this any further by bringing the letters E & V to the SUV conundrum.
What logic??
A lot of them are the same footprint as a 'normal' car, they just have an elevated driving position. You can't include Range Rovers etc.. in this as they've been around forever so not exactly a new phenomenon.

The pollution argument is also slightly negated as a lot of new cars are mild hybrid/hybrid.

I drive a Golf so not trying to defend them.

when I see ridiculous oversized, expensive, black vehicles clogging up the countrys roads, I see it as the drivers equivalent of my love of micropubs & craft beer. a symbol of modern societys madness - driven by fashion, corporate pressure, the US, not a lot of self-awareness, & general shallowness & lack of brain. we literally have more money than sense. some of the justifications are as bad as the ones I conjure up for my expensive drinking habit. yeeeehaaaaaaaa!
Not sure about the comparison, craft beer tends to taste much better, tends to be fresher and is made from quality ingredients without the chemicals found in poor quality mass produced beer. 👍

My X3 diesel does 45mpg and has 360 horsepower with 550l boot space that is ridiculously easy to load and unload in, it has more or less the same size in ground coverage as my
old 3 series so does not take up any more space parking etc, the elevated driving position allows me to see further forward than my 3 series which was basically **** on the road

I can also cover 1000km on a tank, and the emisions are also lower than my 6 year old 3 series

So what exactly is 'negative' about it?

Much rather have an SUV than a complete wase of space and semi-useless 'battery' car that i need to charge up every 5 minutes as my job involves long daily drives
that i cannot afford to waste 3 hours a day sitting on my **** charging up

i remember my first pint...

You don't

and, you don't

They still have worse economy so still pollute more though. Even an EV SUV has worse economy than a saloon so uses more energy
I had a Hyundai Tucson which is a lot bigger than my Golf and it was a LOT more economical. So, how does it pollute more?

Not really a like for like comparison really my old MR2 polluted more than my wifes last car which was a juke. How old were both cars? The fact remains, an SUV with the same age and drivetrain as a saloon will pollute more

I consider SUV drivers to share a similar ethical code to people who sit on other peoples' shoulders at Glastonbury.
I have thought about that comparison for some minutes and the hatred I have for those who sit on others shoulders for gigs does not extend in any way to SUV drivers. Now Tesla drivers - thats a different story.

Bizarre OP…

Anyway, enough has been said already about the relatively negligible environmental impact compared to non SUV equivalents.

What I would say is that the realities of kids seats and prams in the last 15 years or so do mean that they are significantly easier to manage in this type of car.

Now there's a whole freudian avenue to explore. Why that specific make?
Im being a bit facetious but am not attacking the car in any way - just the people who drive them. Massive generalisation I appreciate but I encountered a few whoppers in Teslas on my drive up the M1 to Boro a couple of weeks ago. I now have an unfair and illogical jaundiced view of them.

Fair. I feel the same about Audi drivers. And I'm married to one. So, talk about Freudian analysis being needed!

I hear this a lot and it's something I've never grasped. I guess it's because I grew up loving cars and knowing that a low down driving position = sporty dynamics and therefore that always feels better to me. I don't get the "high driving position" argument at all.
We live in rural North Yorkshire. I used to drive Defenders. The higher driving position is a major positive when driving on country lanes with tall hedges. It gives a massive advantage to see cars coming from a good distance away round corners. I now drive a Freelander 2 I do not class it and an SUV as it's not sporty.
