A superb opening minute goal for Canada, and yes the Canadian team has come a long way, but a more deserving Croatia side completely bossed the midfield and easily won the match.
Defending should have been the main priority for Canada and especially so after watching the first 20 minutes. But even up to 72 minutes, Herdman kept on with his plodding 39 year old (honorary longterm midfielder) captain who really should never have even been named to start the match. Unfortunately, keeping team shape and playing a counter attacking style of football against better teams seldom appears in Herdman’s repertoire.
In closing, while I have little confidence in Soccer Canada seeking out someone more skilled for this important job (i.e. I’ve heard that Herdman‘s appointment was largely political), there will hopefully be someone better in place for the next WC.
