Seems to have gone bonkers. My renewal quote is nearly 100% more than last year and shopping around doesn’t bring it down by much.

Yup, happened to me too. B’stards. I rang (wasted several hours of my life doing so) and asked why Since nothing had changed, no more points etc etc. and they said that’s what it is pal - heff you 🤷‍♂️B’stards.

Just done mine, The renewal quote as always was stupid ( why do they do that? ) so did my shopping around in plenty of time as per all the advice, but couldn't find anything for less than 100% increase. Fairly standard no frills cover. Certainly put a dent in my finances.
Going to be a lot more cars running around not insured.

Speak to your insurer.

Our quote was 283 last year. Insurance in the industry has gone up 43% on average so expecting a rise to £403

Original quote we received for a renewal was £466 so an inc of 64.66%. Couldn't get anything cheaper on a price search

New quote we received after speaking to them was £375.52 so an increase of 32.69%, not thrilling but beating the industry average

Because most people just tut at the letter and let it renew at the new price

Yeah I always do that, have a look on the comparison sites to compare, take about 20/25% off whatever the best price is ring up my renewal company and say I’ve been offered it for this, most of the time they match or get close or it.

Hmmmm. Normally get a renewal quote higher than previous years but get it down to something similar by either threatening or actually going elsewhere.

This year had to shop around because MoreThan aren't doing car insurance any more. Just renewed for less than I paid last year. I only insure for 8000 miles a year - maybe that's the main influencing variable here?

Mine came through overnight, £95 more, which considering I had a windscreen replaced last year is very surprising.
Will do a search over the weekend, but I can live with that if I don't get it down.

Cheapest isn't always best .
I'm with Aviva , not cheap but customer service is superb .
Renewed in April , got a letter this week , out of the blue apologising for overcharging me and a cheque for £ 77 enclosed .
Highly recommend .

I have to say that Aviva have been great when I've had to use car insurance in the past.

Ours jumped from about £400 to £650, price comparison sites saved a few quid, nothing spectacular. Do under 8k year, no incidents in the past year, 20+ years NCD, clean driving record 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

It certainly looks like the insurance industry is run as a cartel. Robbing b*stards.

Yep seems so hiding behind “inflation”. Last I checked inflation wasn’t running at 50% +

Ours jumped by a similar percentage. I wish I could work out why ours costs a grand though compared to £650 for you, in similar area. No recent accidents or anything. Car isn’t crazy expensive. It is a hybrid but didn’t think that would affect it much. But yeah ours went up a good 30% this year and shopping around didn’t achieve much.

Yeah, assume the postcode covers all. There was a horrendous spate of cars getting nicked 3?4? years ago but all seems to have quietened down.

Daughters insurance jumped £200 just because her occupation changed from full time student to working. How on earth does that work? Same car, same mileage, extra years NCD......🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

It's a cartel, surprised they haven't used the war in Ukraine or the rising cost of grain to explain their enormous price hike.

I thought they had to be honest.

But yeah. I feel horrendously ripped off. So is yours £650 for your whole family? Why am I paying a K!

Fraud has increased over the years and so has the cost of repairs and cost of a car.

Back in 1985 a new Fiesta type car was about £5k now its £22k. Fuel was 42p per litre, now 152p. My insurance was about £100 a year, now £300. The insurance seemed to stay roughly £220 for a lot of years, especially if I rang up and said I can get it cheaper from a comparison site. I can see the insurance companies were too competitive, although 50% increase in one year is a bit shock.

By increasing the excess its possible to reduce the premium. If you can afford to pay the first £500 of a claim, increase the excess to £500 if the quote is for lower excess.

Many add in break down cover which can be bought separately for around £40 a year from dedicated companies. Take it off the main insurance quote and see what happens to the premium. Some include legal protection automatically, have you got this already on home insurance? Only insure for one driver if only one person drives the car. Don't insure for 10k miles if you drive 8k a year. The default is often 10k.
