Carrick and keeping youngsters

Watching the latest presser, Carrick mentions something thats struck a chord with me, and rings true for a few of our players for me.

When asked about Hayden Hackney, he says something along the lines of yeah hes good, a standout, but he’s only young and has a long way to go yet. Think this was in relation to the progression of his career and the possibility of other clubs being interested in buying him.

It seems to me that Carrick is actually genuinely interested in keeping HH (could translate into all the youngsters) and ensure he does progress more in himself, rather than look to ‘buying low, selling high in the short term’. (I am aware that HH is a product of our academy).

To me, this screams longevity, in both Carrick and the youngsters, showing that we may not just be looking to make a quick buck, but do have a vested interest in improving the youngsters.

Anyway, enough of my just-woken-up-and-talking-from-the-subconscious musings from me, more sleep needed.

MC is the master when it comes to keeping his emotions in check, but even he must have been a little rattled at the Roger’s news yesterday. He was probably glad it happened after his press conference, otherwise the whole presser would have been dominated by that alone.

Would you put Rogers in that bracket?

I'm really on the fence with that one!

As I've said in another thread, its caught me off guard that bid.

Ideally I would keep him, he is showing some settled form now, however for long period of the season he has been painfully inconsistent.

Money talks so if Villa want him enough he will be gone, and hopefully if that is the case we will have done very well out of it.

I dont think he is our best player, but I do think he is becoming a really good option.

I always feel that despite the money the club always has the young (especially local) players interests at heart. HH has at least another seasons development with us. Wants to be here and isn't on a big wage. Also that gives the other young lads behind him chance to develop so when HH does go we have a replacement to start the process again as we did with Tav. I think we had an agreement with Tav knowing that he was ready to step up to the next level and as that couldn't be with us we let him move on without getting as much money as we should. We're a very ethical football club (compared to others) and another reason why I'm proud of the club I support. We all should be.

100%. Along with RVDB and Hackney - Rogers is one of our best young players.
He's got potential for me, and that's all so far. Hackney is proven, RVDB looks a mature player, as if he's been around for years and already he's performed at all back four positions.

Rogers looks like a kid with the attributes that may knit together. Is he ahead of McGree, Azaz and Jones for a spot behind a striker?

I agree. Tav gave us 3 1/2 full/good seasons, and he was ready to move on - it's worked out for him too.

HH has only gave us 1 1/2 so far. I think it's better for us as a club, and for his own development, to give us one more before moving on too.

I suspect Carrick gets a lot out of helping players improve and develop for their sake, not just the clubs.

Yes, he'll want to keep his best players, his first priority is getting results and performances.

I think he'll also see part of his remit as developing players and helping get to a position where they're ready to step up.

Pretty sure he'll make quite a compelling case to some players if he thinks they're not quite ready to step up yet. Prem clubs are obviously quite happy to take players who aren't yet at the level in the hope it saves or makes them money down the line.

But it's not always the best thing for that players development (even if it is for their bank account).

I think Rodgers would only go if he says he wants to and the money is right. I think if he's happy to stay and develop (which is what he needs to do) we will not sell at this point as its not what's best for him. He's a real talent and moves so quickly with the ball at his feet but is absolutely infuriating at times when he doesn't protect the ball and gives some daft free kicks away around our box. I'd be disappointed if he went now as I think he will bring us some real moments to remember.

The difference between Rogers and McGree/Azaz is he has the ability to completely change the game, and although we might not see it happen as often as we'd like - it's a quality that's very hard to find/buy, and a quality every club is looking for. Man City bought him for £4 million as a 16/17 year old. He's now been reported as Villa's #1 target... Those things don't happen by luck/chance.

Yeah, Rogers could be a seriously top player if he could nail consistency and decision making. Has all the attributes.

You missed the part of the timeline when City let him go for 1 million (despite buying him for 4).

I do agree with you, he is a talent. But to be honest he hasnt shown it as much as we need so far this season, consistently anyway.

I'm not saying he wont develop that, but as it stands he is a very good player in our squad. He is not the best and some weeks not even a guaranteed starter.

Just to be clear, I actually like the lad, and hope we keep him. But he isnt quite a game changer for us yet in the Championship (never mind PL)

Rogers has that x factor in that at times he can look levels above anyone else on the pitch.

I am not saying he is as good but when Rogers is marauding through midfield carrying the ball he has a hint of Jude Bellingham about him, now probably half the time or more Rogers wastes the final pass or shot but if that clicks he could be a top top player.

I think a few ‘meh’ clubs like Fulham, Brighton, and West Ham may well be pencilling in Hackney as a new signing with potential to bring in a big re-sale in a couple of years. I really hope he doesn’t go to a club like that but instead waits for a move to a top six in a season or so’s time - may depend on where we finish this season.

But he's been told to try and make that pass - which most of the time is a very difficult pass to make - because the coaching team know that it only needs to come off occasionally.

I have no stats to back this up - but he's probably got the worst pass % of all the midfielders in his position - at the same time as having the highest % of chances created.

Rodgers has that touch of 'fantasy' to his game that leaves fans open-mouthed and now that he's getting regular game-time and is fully integrated, day-to-day, in a squad, he's improving rapidly. At City, he was a nobody - they're awash with talent - and at Blackpool he was passing through.

I hope he gets his head down and develops into a consistent player with us' someone who loses the ball less than he does at present; someone who demands a start every game. Rather than become another bench-warmer for Villa, whom they may end up loaning out. The problem is, does the interest already make him believe he's the finished article and/or has the money quoted to him by his agent turned his head?

I was watching the Millwall game and thought Rogers was poor throughout. He regularly made the wrong choice of pass and some of his ball control was very poor. Then he set up Forss for his goal by killing a long bouncing ball and playing it perfectly away from two defenders for Forss to finish.

There is a footballer in there but I wouldn't be sorry to see him go. I personally feel he wouldn't be near our starting eleven if we didn't have the injuries we've had or players gone off to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hackney on the other hand is a quality player and should be the first name on the team sheet. Players like him are hard to find and one day he will see him picking up major trophies as the captain of a top 6 club.
