Chris Cooke is new Mayor

Congratulations to Chris Cooke. When you actually look at the voting figures, the majority of the people of Middlesbrough didn’t vote for him. A poor turnout of only 27.75%, Chris winning with only 39.87% of that vote. Not such a huge ringing endorsement really. More people voted against him than actually for him. Just hope Chris delivers his promises or he will be out on his ears just like Preston. One major issue in my eyes, collect all the outstanding council tax debt over the last 10-12 years and budgets could be increased to help with social care and highways
Ooh the Brexit argument

It was 3% lower than last time so hardly a paradigm shift of voter apathy and overturning a majority of over 10,000 votes from 2019, so completely disagree.

This feels like a huge result. I wasn't expecting it. I feel like the party machine was focusing mainly on Darlington. I didn't hear much from Chris and thought he struggled to maybe get the "column inches" so to speak to get his message across.

It would be a disgrace if Preston doesn't step down or isn't removed from the MDC.

come on Norman, you said he wasnt up to it and the wrong man for the job only 4 weeks ago *(3rd April).
I still don't think he is ready for the task and I don't mean that in a bad way but that doesn't mean I cannot wish someone who I know well the best of luck. I do hope he proves me wrong.

What I will say for Chris, when he gets his teeth into something he is like a dog with a bone and he will try to complete what he's set out to do to the best of his ability.

Lots didn't get turned away because lots didn't even go, because they knew they couldn't vote, it's not possible to count them.
I am definitely against the introduction of voter ID and I know it has been done for tactical reasons by the Tories but I find it hard to believe that anyone that is proactive enough to want to vote isn't also capable of getting the right ID. My assumption would be that the people that don't have a form of ID are the same people that would never bother voting anyway.

We spoke to people yesterday that didn't even know an election was going on, and we even leafleted their home days before. You'd be very surprised how many just don't watch the news or look at leaflets.

One of the main concerns were people voting who have had a name change being turned away because they never brought additional documents.

It's just a simple thing, but adding more reasons for an already apathetic voter to not vote is definitely not going to help increase turnout for local elections.

I wonder how many pensioners didn't vote due to not having a photo ID?

It would be good to know the age group of those that did and didn't vote.

Why does he want to rip up the Linthorpe Road Cycle Lane?
