Corners against Betis

One of the interesting things yesterday was that we stayed in formation and made no attempt at a set piece when we had a corner.

Would be interesting if that is a analytics based decision.

Has it been the same all pre-season?

We did it loads at the end of last season. It’s one of the only things I don’t like about how we play.

The Coventry league game was a bit of a fluke I think, it came about mostly because of the away fans taking ages to give the ball back, and it looked like the Cov players switched off.

I’m sure I’ve read the stats are pretty compelling in that, in general, corners achieve little to nothing for the attacking side.
Fans love them tho
Cardiff got promoted by scoring loads off corners / free kicks a few years ago.

I think there is something to be said about playing to your strength at all times.

If your team is set up to be big and strong in the air then it makes sense to get corners in the box.

If your team is set up for possession, dominance and passing moves - throwing the ball in the box is unlikely to be beneficial.

There are number of stars about this all broadly saying the same thing - almost 99% of corners don’t lead directly to a gol and 96% don’t end up with any kind of goal.

Pulis was particularly successful when last in the Prem - something like 15 scored.

Not sure how significant all that is btw

An analysi of 115,199 corners taken in 11,234 matches to see how much use they were. From those, 1,459 goals were from a corner. This meant an average of 4.74 per cent of goals were scored in some way or another from corners, but just 1.27% of corners led directly to a goal.

Been doing it for a while and it is a definite and innovative tactic. We have a line of 4 players. It goes back to third or fourth then forward again. The aim is to move the defenders around before playing it in. It forces the other team to either empty the box or not put pressure on us.

Presumably we will also occasionally change it if we spot the other team forgetting to mark properly in the box.

Nice to see us actually developing innovative tactics.

I thought our approach to corners in the two playoff games against Coventry was a major failure after how we unlocked them with a quick one in the league game, so I'd be glad to see us try something more creative with them again.

A lot of fans will kick off though. “Get it in the mixer” “Why do we always play it short?” etc.

My father in law and his mate are always raging when we play a short corner 😂

Same as when Steffen used to hold onto the ball before pass. “Just get rid!!!”

There’s no educating some of the old school unfortunately. One of them was still whinging last year that we got rid of Ikpeazu.

Someone did a study and 1.27% of regular (not short) corners lead to a goal. (Edit just seen the earlier post that referenced this)

If you haven’t got a big goal threat like is, then it’s probably more than 1 in 100 lead to a goal.

Teams on average win 5 corners a game. You get 2-3 goals a season on average from lobbing corners in.

Short corners are the way to go, because the defence has to re-organise from the standard corner formation.

Not seen any stats, but it felt like opposition teams seemed to be quite successful at times from set piece delivery into our box last season.
