Dan Barlaser

It's hard isn't it because we don't know how far players are away from fitness. No idea if Hackney is days, weeks or months away from his return.
The 3 month timeline on o-Brien takes him to January but whether that is still on course, who knows?

Surely they are lining up a CM signing or loan in January to get straight in.
Carrick gave the impression that Hackey is pretty close, gazette were reprting last week that he might have been back for last night

We look in good shape when the ball is crossed. Fry and VDB have taken up good positions and are reasonably tight to their striker. Engel probably should be tighter to his man on the back post but he's goal side. Barlaser and Howson are well positioned to deal with the cut back and the runners coming in. This is proven when the cut back comes across it comes straight to Barlaser's feet. I still don't know what he was actually trying to do. Whether he was trying to get the ball under control or what? But he just needs to put his foot through that and get rid of it. If Engel had been tighter to his man it may have been prevented but 95% of the blame has to.lie with Dan.
I think Barlaser was fooled because either the attacker dummied to play the ball or it deflected off him. Not sure which it was. If he could have got out of the way the ball would probably have gone out for a throw in. Either way, Barlaser couldn't sort his feet out and only managed to control it into the path of the Hull player. Boro had five defenders in the box, against two attackers, the guy who scored was running in from midfield. Maybe someone should have been covering his run.

It was one of those bizarre goals that happens from time to time. I don't think it's fair to blame Barlaser.

It didn't look like a great performance from Boro but no doubt they will play worse this season and win.

personally think barlaser is poor and dont expect him to have a very long career at the boro

Who would you expect to cover the run?

This is the point the ball comes across. As a coach I'm looking at this and I think we are in good shape to deal with whatever comes across. VDB and Fry have taken good positions. Fry had covered the front post while VDB is tight to their most dangerous striker. If I'm being critical, Engel could be tighter to his man but he's holding a good line with VDB and Fry and is goal side of the their right winger. Barlaser and Howson are well positioned to deal with any cut back. Dijksteel has recovered reasonably well and has pressure on the ball carrier.

This is the point Barlaser makes contact with the ball. This is mainly for reference for when you get to picture 4.

This is straight after Barlaser has fluffed it to their right winger. As you can see Barlaser has left the space he was defending and gone to the ball to try and recover it. That's the natural thing to do when you make a **** up. Try to make up for it.

This is the point of the goal scoring strike. It is hit from the exact space thay Barlaser was defending but has now left. Howson has come across to try and get a block in and is the closest man to him when he hits it but in no way was this his responsibility.

I'm not looking at this as a coach and think we've defended poorly as a team. Everyone has gone to good positions and done their job. I'm not going to tear this apart. I'm just going to accept it being an individual error. I'm not really sure why people are saying with defended it poorly as a team.

Now goal number 1. It would be interesting to know what the coaching team make of this one because it is shambolic. It looks like we have gone for a bit of a hybrid marking system. Fry and VDB are marking zones with the others taking a man.

It appears to me that Delap is Barlaser's man, he actually has his arms around him as the initial corner is delivered. I think Crooks is marking number 5 (he doesn't follow him after the flick on either).

Not even within 5 yards of him when he nods it in.

If you look at the replay it looks like Crooks and Barlaser are supposed to be blocking, rather than marking anyone in particular, he's too strong and he's away, with no players beyond at the far post. Poor defending all round.

I suppose its hard to know 100% what each players role is supposed to be. It doesn't look very well organised either way and needs a good looking at. Something is very wrong for it to result in a free header from 2 yards out and it's not the first time this season.

One thing that's worth noting is that there's no one on the posts. If there was a man on the back post it probably would have prevented it

Also who was supposed to be marking Delap when he broke away and we had to concede the corner in the first place?
If he's a midfielder then Barlaser must surely also be partly or fully responsible for that too?

I think he’s a luxury player, he’ll look great in a side playing well where he’s afforded the time and space to pick his passes.

I don’t see a nastiness in him or a willingness to get stuck in when the team needs him to. I think I made a comment like I wouldn’t want him in the trenches with me.

I like Barlaser but, come on, that’s his fault man 😂
