Dog Collar advice

Hey! Not here looking for any sarcastic comments or judging just advice and general know how from fellow dog owners.

So basically, I have a 1 and a half year old Lurcher who is an energetic pup and loves everyone and every animal.
However he knows that when we're out all he has to do is manoeuvre himself a certain way and the collar will slip right off his neck. I've owned 3 Seperate collars now and they've all been terrible even when as tight as they can be and I've asked at a local pet shop and they looked at me like I was stupid.

I'm the kind of owner who believes dogs should be on the lead and it's even more the case when your dog is prominently a greyhound 😂 He is absolutely rapid and it's almost psyically impossible to catch him. He's got zero recall which is another reason I keep him on the lead.

He's got off the lead a couple of times in the last few weeks and not only is it embarrassing that he's sprinting round and I can't catch him, there's the odd awful person around. I've been threatened by. a **** down my end who he ran along side saying 'if you don't get him it's not your dog that'll get it, it's you' and awful comments off other people who only like to pass judgment on your when they're miles away.
It's taken some extremely lovely people who let their dogs off with him and then help with the general catching at the end 😂 I'm also worried he jumps up at a kid (he loves kids).

So anybody who's ever had this kind of dog, can I seek some advice. Is there a certain collar you could recommend or would it be better to put him on a harness?

It's knocking my confidence in walking him, and he's not getting anywhere near as much time out as he should be.

Thanks in advance.

We had most success with a halti. He despised the thing for about two weeks, but got ok with it.
A harness might well be your best option.
( It made our lives 20x worse as he was a ' puller ' )
Thank you! That's what I'm thinking, honestly it's a nightmare, I don't think a harness could slip over his head? Surely haha

I use a harness on my dalmatian. Much better for her as she's not choking herself when she's pulling on the lead.

She can't slip out of it either as it goes under her chest and through her legs.

Beautiful dogs Dalmatian's! May I ask what kind of harness you use please?

Yep I`ll +1 for the harness if your dog is slipping it`s collar.

Also in regards to pulling and this is going to take incredible patience from you and whoever else walks your dog

When they pull, immediately turn round and walk in the opposite direction and keep doing it, eventually they`ll stop, ours did and it was beautiful seeing them change from a nightmare to a dog who walks beside you.
Also shorten the lead so they aren`t ahead of you, they should always be at your side imo

Yup, harness the way to go. If you still want to be able to let your dog off the lead, remember there are quite a few ‘fields for hire’, which will provide a safe space for doggy to stretch their legs!

Harness for me.

I know it’s a completely different breed of dog but we moved from a collar to a harness quite early on with my Yorkshire terrier as she was struggling with pulling and the collar almost choking her.

You can ask but I'm afraid as she's an old girl I bought it about 14 years ago so I have no idea!

From a quick Google they all look pretty similar these days so I doubt you'd go wrong with one that's size appropriate

Have you thought of a slip lead with a double loop as an alternative to a harness?
If you are going down the harness route then Halti do a good one, but if you are local then pop into Wagsandwhiskers opposite Barnacles in Stockton. They stock the Perfect Fit harness which is modular and so you can use different sized components to get a really secure and comfortable fit. The added bonus of it is that you can replace elements as they wear out or if the dog grows.

Perfect fit

I've looked into one not far from where I am in Redmarshall! I don't usually let him off, he just gets so excited and slips his collar and it's the reaction of some people that have really knocked my confidence. I'm constantly checking his collar is tight on his walk and it's getting me down to.

I agree with people that dogs should be under control, he's just so fast and I struggle to catch him so the threats have really dented my confidence haha, to the point where I'm even contemplating only going round the block in the pitch black

Harness. Less chance of the dogs damaging their trachea . I know of a Jack Russell that was always dragged round on a collar and lead. Damaged his throat that badly it cost over £2k in vets bills to help him breathe again.

They can slip out of a harness, although more tricky perhaps for a larger dog. Our terrier escaped from his, or almost did,. If the strap goes behind the front legs it is more secure

You can get lurcher and greyhound specific collars that reduce the risk of them slipping out.

Failing that, the I use a harness with a lead attached and a small lead link that runs from the harness to the collar.

very effective for lively dogs.
