Eddie Howe agrees 2.5 year deal to manage the Geordies

Wonder if they think they are already down so are going for someone who will get them promoted in their first season. Think Howe is a fantastic manager but he isnt exactly someone with any experience of this sort of task, if they keep Jones on to help him they might have a chance. Still significantly better than what they had with Bruce

Coutinho in the championship?

Not sure why there's so much admonishment of him. He took a team from the old fourth division into the prem and kept them for a few seasons playing some lovely stuff.

Ironic too that so many people on here idolise Karanka and yet we sat and watched his team give us a footballing lesson a few times.

Anyway, all opinions.

Yep. Seemed a decent enough bloke as well so sad to see he's taken the Saudi money.

I suspect it's more about his personality that rubs some up the wrong way rather than what he's achieved. As you say, he's done very well to take a lowly club like Bournemouth, who naturally are probably League One at best, to the top flight and keep them there for five seasons.
I do like Howe and think he could have done better than Newcastle because I feel this job and the expectations of it might end up damaging his reputation somewhat, and I think Staveley and co. are probably looking at other managerial targets already.

Assuming he is appointed, his job will be to try to keep them in the PL this season but (unless he is a complete idiot) he will be given the chance to take them back up with a huge budget to do so if they go down or expected to stabilise them in the PL before the appointment of a "Marquee Manager" as they really start to spend the big bucks. I can't see any way, short of achieving top ten PL next season, that his tenure will be longer than 18 months. Still should be a nice little earner

I don't see him keeping them up with their current squad, I'm just not a huge fan of Eddie Howe.

All depends on that January window.

I'll accept Leeds coming down instead of them if it comes to it.
I really hope they go down. But their squad is actually ok, if they have a decent manager they shouldn’t be in any real danger of going down.

Last season there was a debate on here when they were right down at the bottom about whether their squad was good enough to stay up etc. They ended up finishing 12th I think.

As much as I’d love to see them go down, any decent manager should be able to keep them up (dependant on not suffering major injuries to Wilson and St Max).

I don't think there's much chance of Callum Wilson not suffering a major injury and they're already conceding hatfuls before Howe takes over, the last thing he's known for is organising a defence.

I always thought Newcastle would stay up last season, but it was greatly boosted by Joe Willock going on a long scoring run.

Yeah Wilson will definitely pick up and injury or two. Whether it’s for a few weeks or a few months could easily have a significant impact on their season.

I’d imagine Howe will keep them up although not entirely convinced, not even that confident in it to be honest. Anything could happen

The only point I was really making is their squad is actually ok in my opinion.

But having lived in Newcastle for 17 years (almost all of my adult life) I don’t think there would be many people happier than me if they do get relegated 😂😂

I think the biggest problem Newcastle have is playing in a toxic atmosphere. If Howe can get the crowd behind him they should recover to their usual lower mid table placing.

Don't forget the same fans hounded out Sir Bobby after only four games into the season having finished 5th in the Prem the year before.
Hope they get exactly what they deserve..... nowt.
Ah but No that didn’t happen though not according to the new book of Geordie history as they all loved him and was never once boo’ed.

btw yes it bloody well did

Fair point. I can accept that.

Bournemouth had a fortune to spend when we were up against them in the Championship.

Yeah, he definitely did well to keep Bournemouth up for so long but there was nothing plucky about their promotion.

They heavily breached FFP and would have been deducted points if they'd stayed in the division.

So they've got a decent squad, but if they suffer injuries to 2 players they might struggle to stay up?

Never understand the attempts to undermine what Howe did with Bournemouth by referring to them spending fortunes, which isn't really true. Whilst they broke FFP, their wage bill was no where near the highest in the league and their transfer fees were tiny. I think they spent around £4m on fees the season they were promoted and most of it recouped from the Grabban sale.
