Emerson in his pomp>better than Souness.

I know its all about opinions but for me Souness was tbe best ever Boro player i'd seen & that includes Willie Maddren & probably the best ever Liverpool player

Emerson was awesome for a few weeks but you cant compare him to an iconic Boro & Liverpool legend

It was obvious where this thread was going. To add to the debate Emerson had more skill than souness but didn't apply it often enough. He did have better hair though.

Souness wasn't the best player to ever play for liverpool Dalglish was... But imagine a team with both, scousers don't have to imagine lucky buggers

I did say in my opinion laughing & still do think hes Liverpools best

He was only with us for 40 games. Thats about a seasons worth. For unfulled potential and damage to the club I rank him alongside Gaston Rameriez.
I never saw Souness play, but as far as I am aware Souness was loyal and hard grafting player whp did not dissappear at the drop of a hat. Dont think the 2 are comparable.

Any player can have a purple patch. Emerson was unbelievable for about 6 games. I'm not sure that's enough to say that he would definitely have been capable of sustaining that level even if he'd been a model pro. Arguably those games were against weaker teams too. Top players perform like that against top teams. Did Emerson do that in that spell? Or did he just dominate average players?

Milan Baros was outstanding and top scorer at one of the Euros. Didn't mean he was better than Ronaldo for that spell though.

Justin Hoyte had a good game once (honest) and scored an absolute peach, outside of the right boot into the top corner. Didn't mean he was better than Dani Alves for that game though.

And we are all entitled to our opinions erimus. Whilst working in Liverpool about 10 years ago I said Dalglish was the best player ever to pull on a Liverpool shirt, the reaction was mostly, you could be right, so I don't think there is even a massive consensus amongst their own fans.

I am not sure Emerson had a purple patch. He had a patch where he showed us all what he could be with a little application

He certainly seemed to have the most natural ability of any Boro player I have seen .
His application of those talents let a lot to be desired :(

Can anyone remember this one little in-game incident?
Boro at home in a night game.
We get a free-kick.
With his team mates bombing forward Emerson suddenly decides to take the free kick with a back-heel!
Cue khaos and rapid back-pedaling by his teammates!!o_O

Typical of him in a way - playing his own game.

Errm my reminiscence story a little short.
I should add that there was no Boro player behind him.
He had decided to just take the back-heel 'blind'

6 great games doesn't make a great player.

He let himself down first and foremost. At Boro, he let his club down and the fans who instantly adored him.

For me, he has no place being called a great at our club.

Most would agree tryasize, but that is not the question the op asked. You can feel he let everyone down and still recognize the talent.

Emerson was stronger, faster, and more skillful than Graham Souness.
But better?
No.
For one main reason.
Graham Souness is a professional footballer who came to Boro to do a job.
Emerson considered himself too good to do that.
That's why Graham Souness has a career full of trophies and is respected all over the world.
Emerson does not and is not.

Emerson needed the right manager to have a chance of making the most of himself, I'd say he probably had that with Bobby Robson at Porto. Bryan (captain lager) Robson maybe wasn't the right person to make him get his **** together.

For me Emerson just didn’t have the mobility that Souness had. He was ok in a straight line but he was as heavy as a fruit machine.
