Emerson in his pomp>better than Souness.

Agree I was OTT in his ten matches I thought we had a world beater.

Souness was amazing as well.

My favourite goal by Emerson was at Old Trafford in a 3-3 draw. From memory he played centre forward.

Imagine if he went up top for the FA cup final

Emerson should have been remembered for his footballing skills and prowess instead of him failing to return to the club. Skills wise he was better than Souness and was an absolute brilliant footballer when interested, unfortunately, his interest didn't last long on Teesside.

The Sunderland goal at Roker was brilliant. I had free tickets from Tetley Brewery and was sat in the Clock Stand. It was very difficult to sit on your hands when that one flew in. He then repeated it the following season at the Stadium of Light. That one I did cheer. (y) :ROFLMAO:

I don't think you can compare a guy who played a dozen good games when he could be bothered to turn up with Graeme Souness, who achieved virtually everything in the club game, proved himself wherever he went and went on to have a successful managerial career.

In no way was he better not even in his “pomp”. As a footballer he had all the talent but wasted it. Souness didn’t.

In terms of their contribution to Middlesbrough, one stayed for just over a season the other 4 consistently good seasons. In advancement of career Souness played 54 times for his country, won the championship, European Cup Fa Cup and played in World Cup.. Emerson never played in any representative form for his country. Souness scored 73 goals, Emerson 20 odd.

One of the most telling moments for me watching Emerson was when we played Arsenal at the Riverside in Sept 96. Up to that point Emerson had been unreal but this Arsenal game stood out for the wrong reasons (apart from losing 0-2!). Emerson was up against Vieira that day and the Frenchman absolutely bossed him. Had him in his pocket all game to the point you barely realised Emerson was on the pitch. Vieira was a class apart, the real deal. With Emerson it will always be a case of what might have been. With his head screwed on the right way I dare say he could have reached the levels of Vieira and Keane etc but in truth he was a long way short. I still love watching his long range goals on Youtube to this day but I reckon they gloss over what he was lacking.

A virtually unknown Patrick Viera dominated him when Arsenal beat us at the Riverside then his performane level dropped. particularly v the top sides.
Whereas Souness rarely let anyone get the better of him and was one of the best midfielders in Europe in his era.
Just posted something similar, didn't see your post beforehand. Vieira gave him a lesson that day!
