Engel Appreciation Thread

The stats don't bear this out. He is a fairly good passer of the ball. He does make some bloody awful passes which effects your opinion because they are memorable for how bad they are.
He plays the easiest possible ball, which is usually backwards, and still messes up badly quite frequently in relation to how difficult the pass is.

I didn’t see the game but I hear he pulled off his speciality twice in the first half, the one where he plays backwards and inside straight to one of their attackers.

He has a 93% completion rate with long passes.

He did play 2 very poor passes at the back last night one of which should have seen us punished. Which is my point, because he plays 2 or 3 awful balls in most games it colours people's perceptions of his passing ability.

They look like brain farts to me rather than the inability to pass.

Him and Ayling both improved massively by the way. Norwich went so narrow and they were the players that benefitted most playing against 10 men.
Norwich were awful from that point onwards.
Yeah they did, but part of that was how bad they had started the game, and how easy Norwich made it once they went down to 10.

He was dreadful before the sending off and obviously did much better afterward. He needs to be more aggressive on the pitch especially when played at wing back. With 11 men Norwich had it so comfortable at the back cause no one was there to pressure their right sided defenders, McGree's role is to drift inside to overload the centre but it falls flat when there is an easy ball out to the right for the opposition. Even in the second half Engel was still about 10/15 yards too far back when they were trying to play it out, and was only getting within 5 yards of the man after he had already recieved the ball and got his head up.

I wish they would fit a colostomy bag to his brain then - and make sure it is regularly emptied.

I agree with this. But it’s something he needs to cut out.

I don’t go along with the idea that he always plays the easy pass. He often receives the ball off the centre back and looks to play it first time inside to a midfielder. That isn’t an easy skill (admittedly it doesn’t always come off 😅), but it really opens the game up when it works… it’s a brave pass

I like Engel. He's wholehearted and looks like he understands that this wins over a lot of fans regardless of ability. He has ability though, which tells me that confidence is a major part of his game. He gets isolated frequently because he is charging up and down the touchline waiting for a pass which comes about 10% of the time and the player nominally playing front of him has wandered infield leaving the ball back to the left sided centre back as the best option, unless we would encourage him to play a risky ball into the congested midfield or whip a cross in from deep to our often non existent centre forward.

So in essence I have have no issues with him recycling play via the centre back as when the option isn't there to cross. He'll get better defensively if we can put out a consistent centre back pairing.

Very very harsh for me, he was at the heart of everything we did right last night. He always takes risks and plays some lovely balls inside, good crosser. He is asked to do alot of work down the left back and forth. It is definitely not an easy position to play in this team/setup.

Great commitment and always gives 100%, he has lapses in concentration with simple balls but i think that can easily be coached out of him.

With better players around him i think he has what it takes to be a top left back in this league.

Maddo was right after the match.
Engel gave the ball away an awful lot and in very dangerous positions in the first half.
He did take his goal well and played confidently as the team rallied with the man advantage.
the passes into the middle of the pitch is something he's been told to do otherwise he wouldn't keep doing it
also there's nothing ahead of him so it's the only pass he has
a few norwich attacks last night were 3v1 down the left

He needs to play further forward then his mistakes won't be punished. I like him, but he's never a left back, as I said on another thread should always start ahead of Thomas, haven't seen enough of Bangura yet.

When McGree and O'Brien finally got moving, it took a long time, Engel's game improved. He's not going to run the flank alone and it's alright knocking him for passing it back regularly but if there's no outlet it's always going to happen to retain possession. I'm sure you don't just want him to punt it aimlessly up hoping to find an invisible target man.

He's inconsistent in his own half, can give the ball away in dangerous positions, as did Ayling, McNair, Rav and Clarke last night. Some of Clarke's passes were so under hit that Engel was under pressure immediately or they were intercepted.

Engel's the best left back at the club, until there's a better one brought in he should get the nod. One the other two left sided players woke up we managed some decent interplay.
