England Squad

He's better than Rice already in my opinion.

Alexander Arnold simply has to go. Trippier and Walker are not capable of putting in the crosses he's capable of, yes you lose a bit defensively but with 3 centre backs we should be more than capable of mopping up.

Personally I hope we don’t need to go down the 3 centre backs route, flat back 4 of Walker, stones, Maguire, shaw for me

Bellingham will be in the squad. He has to be. He's arguably our best box to box midfielder. He's had a fantastic season at Dortmund. If anything, he should be in the starting 11, let alone making the squad.

5 of the 7 that'll drop out look obvious. Ramsdale, Godfrey, JWP, Watkins, Saka.

I'm assuming a RB will be dropped, and think he may drop TAA - although he's arguably been in the best form of all of our RBs of late.

Then I think a midfield spot - probably Lingard.

Rice, Bellingham, Mount as a midfield 3 looks a no brainier to me

Exactly. It's the most bizarre form of criticism to level against a manager - he picks the players he rates highly. What is he supposed to do?

Imagine this thought process - "I like Lingard, he's never let me down as England Manager. I didn't pick him for a long time when he wasn't playing for Man Utd, but in the past 3 months he's been in top form for West Ham. It therefore seems reasonable to consider him for a place in my squad. Oh but hang on, idiots on the internet will accuse me of only picking my favourites if I do that, so maybe I should select someone else instead".

I think Southgate has shown repeatedly that he picks his squad on merit and isn't afraid to jettison his supposed "favourites" if they are not performing for their clubs.
Not sure your point it wasn’t a criticism im
Pointing out that as from his time here we know Gareth has certain Players that he knows he can rely on and lingard has been his go to guy since the u21 so my point was if it’s choice between the two Gareth will in my opinion go with lingard.

nothing more

Hope so

if we was German he’d be in I know that

so let’s hope

I would also like to see a back four but Southgate isn't enough if a risk taker.
5 at the back has to have Trent and Shaw playing on either wing.

Bamford needs to explore any possibility of playing for another country.

We've played the last 3 matches with 4-3-3, and all 10 matches in 2019 with 4 at the back.

It was only in 2020 where we briefly went back to 3 at the back, and it didn't go well.

I think we'll be playing 4 at the back.

I'd go with this......

..................Pickford.....................

Walker....Maguire..Stones..Shaw

......Mount.....Rice....Foden.........

Sancho..........Kane........Rashford

Seriously? Foden in a midfield 3?

You're losing so much from him.

He has played nearly all season for City in a front 3, even at times as a false 9 and he's been fantastic (arguably City's best attacker).

Personally, if Southgate lined up with our most exciting player as part of a midfield 3, then I'd be extremely disappointed.

There are several players who I’ve seen so little of over the last season, I struggle to have an opinion on.
I’ve only seen Watkins, Saka, Godfrey, White play a handful of times.

I'd prefer him playing in a front 3 for England but I'd be confident in us scoring goals with both Rashford and Kane in the side. You'd also have the plus of Shaw and Rashford linking up down the left, as they have for United this season.

Ask Rice to literally sit in and encourage Foden and Mount to just go out and express themselves and play.

I'll also be happy if Foden does start on the left of a 3, with Bellingham in midfield though.

Fair enough, but every manager has players they know and can rely on, so that point doesn't really need to be made IMO. You may not have meant it this way zorro, but there are plenty of posts online elsewhere saying Southgate is an idiot who only picks his favourites, i.e. Lingard, Dier, Winks, etc. The reality is he's left 2 of those 3 out and may yet decide not to take Lingard.

With that team though, you'd have a front 3, then Foden & Mount part of a midfield 3 who are a lot more forward thinking. Plus Walker/Shaw attacking the flanks. We'd be cut open at times against the best sides.

IMO, Rice as DCM and Maguire/Stones at the back, we'd be massively weak defensively.

I think a midfield 3 of Rice/Jude/Mount is the best for us for balance.

Foden has to start, and his best position is part of a front 3.

Put our best players in their best positions and then work round that would be my strategy.

Nope that wasn’t my point though I suspect many think like that. I’ll admit I’m
Surprised dier isn’t in but fair play to Gareth.

I do like Lingard as he can get goals from nowhere.

Bamford obviously left out in case he brought his mam along.

Why is ramsdale rated? Becomes Bournemouth keeper. Bournemouth go down. Becomes sheff utd keeper utd go down. Dodgy keeper.

Totally agree. If we play Mount in the middle and Foden in the front 3 we could do very, very well.
