Evidently it is a Derby.

The reality is Teesside and Middlesbrough is closer to Sunderland and Sunderland supporting areas than large parts of Newcastle supporting Northumberland. The Geordie fans I know north of Newcastle don't even acknowledge Sunderland. They quite like Boro too as it happens. That said, the Tyne and Wear area is much more joined together than Wearside and Teesside, so it's natural that area feels more as one.

I must say I've got an opposite view to many regarding games against local sides. I'm North East England born and bred and like to see all the local teams do well. Travelling extensively throughout the area also gives me a different perspective of the area. I'm of the opinion that the big three sides should all be in the top flight together, as long as Boro win all the games of course.
Agreed

Couldn’t give a shiny ***** if it’s a derby or not , I have lots of mates in the Tyne and Wear area so I do look forward to the games and craic that ensues.

It’s not a pleasant atmosphere being near the away fans like . Last time we played them in the league and beat them 2-0 the tickets only available were near the away fans. They were chucking bottles at us . Couldn’t go last night due to work. There is an element of both sets of supporters who simply just go to this game just to try and start **** . You can tell the type , the “fans” who watch the opposition fans more than the team

Been on their forum most are making puerile comments but some fairly reasonable and respectful to Boro. That’s the nature of the forums I suppose. A bit of banter is good, it’s healthy and a cathartic stress release. Teesside Steve has done a great job at winding them up and they were reeled in easily like a small fish off Whitby pier haha

Brighton and Palace "the M23 Derby" is the most crackers, 50 odd miles separate them?

History made it a derby, which is the best way.

Barcelona v Real Madrid is the biggest rivalry in Spain and they're over 300 miles apart.

Restricting it to clubs from the same town/city has always been a daft view point to take for me.

A Derby is just one reason for a rivalry. Others like you say grow from history, or from clubs being pitted against each other on a similar level, ie the club that is most likely to stop the other achieving things.

Not sure if anyone has posted this
Boro to Sunderland is 24 miles

however the Liverpool Manchester 'derby' is 32 miles
Liverpool v Manchester not really a derby like Man U v Man C or Rangers v Celtic.
Boro v Sunderland is a regional “derby” as is Sunderland v Newcastle, we don’t matter to Sunderland because they know they never gonna beat us. 👍🏻👍🏻

All derbys are regional. derbys are geograpjhic by nature. So you don't need to air quote the word. no one thinks that Norwich vs Ipswich isn't a derby and they are about 15 miles further from each other than us and the mackems. Crappy roads too.

It takes longer to get from Chelsea to Arsenal than from Boro to Sunderland.

I guess the only thing that you could argue that stops it being a derby is that people from boro don't regularly mix with people from sunderland, because there is absolutely nothing worth visiting the place for. But I'm sure plenty of us have mackem work colleagues

That Yellow Jacket just about says it all, what it most certainly doesn't say is "hard boy"
Only a Mackem would have the neck to wear it.

I'm just going to say it once, when I was a kid no one, NO ONE said it wasn't a derby on either side. Here we are 50 years later and the mackems have managed just 12 wins in 49 league games spread across 50 years. They've taken a hell of a pummeling, repeatedly, and now they don't want to accept it's a derby.

This utter failure by Sunderland in the Tees-Wear Derby, and the pretense of it not being a derby, are absolutely related.

Here are a few facts on the derby in the 50 years I've been on the planet.
- We've knocked them out of cups FOUR times, and they've knocked us out just once
- We've won 27 and they've won 12 in the league, 31 Boro wins to 13 Sunderland in all competitions
- We've outscored them in the league 79 to 47
- Longest (and current) unbeaten run 7 games and 10 years 7 months in favour of Boro.
- League doubles, 6 times Boro have doubled them, zero for the mackems
