Five criminally overrated bands (in your opinion) and five criminally underrated bands (also in your opinion)...

I agree with the view that not liking something that someone else likes doesn't mean it's over-rated so I'm going to pull from my list of artists I do like for my over-rated.....

OVERRATED
Depeche Mode (I live in the US now and they're viewed as Goth Gods weirdly and are MASSIVE....... I mean they're decent, but not THAT good)

The Clash (as someone said earlier, decent but not all that)

The Fall (when you record as much stuff as you do then there have to be some gems but sooooo much dross too)

UNDERRATED

House of Love
Talk Talk
The Decemberists
Beth Orton
Fountains Of Wayne

I get the feeling so many people put Coldplay because they feel it's cool and edgy thing to do.
8 x no 1 albums (out of 8), not bad going!

I think they get stick as they appeal to the masses, whilst they might not necessarily be anyone's favourite, but it's cool to dislike what's popular, apparently.

They're not in my top 50, but they were a decent band (another one who was better in their early days).
I liked The Scientist, Talk, Fix You, Shiver and Clocks, probably a few others from X&Y and before.

Yeah I would agree with that. I certainly lost interest in them lately and their early stuff seemed quite bit better. I think you're right. It's good to bash the popular. There's something in stating bands with high sales are over rated. which is a strange logic when you think about it! The also put on a cracking gig do Coldplay. regardless of what people think. They know how to do stadium shows.

Overrated

the rolling stones

elvis presley

the doors

michael jackson

adele

Underrated

The Kinks

Velvet Underground

Sex Pistols

Echo & the Bunnymen

Steele Pulse
Totally agree with the rolling stones being overated, they were great in the 60s but the last good album they made was Exile and that was around 1971/72! Pure gash since then.

Great shout with the Fallen Leaves!

I'll add pretty much anything by Billy Childish into the underrated category. Kurt Cobain, Jack White and Graham Coxon can't all be wrong right?

Elliot Smith is probably another as well, ditto Simon Joyner.

Yeah I've not paid to go to a Coldplay gig in singular, but I saw them at Glasto, twice I think, and fair to say pretty much everyone was there watching and enjoying it.

I certainly think it's criminal that someone thinks that Led Zep are over rated!
Haven't seen you posting in a long while @Michael_Vronsky and it's great to see you back - hope you're well (y)

Oh, and completely agree with the sentiments. I have 3 rules in life which are simple to follow... don't trust people who dislike dogs, don't trust people who love olives and especially don't trust people who don't recognise Led Zeppelin as perhaps the greatest of all time ;)

Hey Gord. Yeah, I wanted to check the board when I saw that the great Terry Cooper had passed away and it was actually really nice to engage again after a long time away!

Ha ha! Love it... especially the dog reference! It's a bit like when people say they don't like The Beatles and I just can't let it go!!! Good to hear from you.

I've got 4 Zep albums, and I like a few tracks- including Stairway, that mainstay from 6th form parties, but I still think they are rated higher than they should have been. I also really liked Big Log, but that was Plant solo.

Ah, this old nugget. Many a thread over the years has been dedicated to which bands are crap and which aren't, with people trying their best to get some cred for their obscure tastes.... not seen Varicose Bingo mentioned once! ;)

I don't like to use the word "over-rated" as it implies my opinion is better than others, when it's really about personal taste. I would say, "bands I don't really get", and would include:
The Stone Roses
Led Zep
Rolling Stones

Now for "under-rated", or under appreciated, I'd say:

Talk Talk
Big Country
Crowded House
James
(No laughing at the back) - A-Ha. Not just teeny boppers. Albums like Lifelines and Analogue prove that.
